I have a Nikon D5300 and was hesitant to take it out during the storms over the past week here in the California Sierra's. Does anyone have a experience with or suggestions for a good camera raincover that I can use?

Check B&H photo. They sell rain covers for many dslr cameras.

I carry a storm jacket that hangs from my tripod and I had the opportunity to use it last week. I bought the one that has the velcro seam that allows the camera to sit atop a tripod. I was very happy with how it worked. It took just a bit of planning to figure out how to get your camera inside and mounted on the tripod at the same time. Light weight, durable and easy to use is what I discovered. You just need to constantly check the front glass, which is all that is exposed to the elements before each shot.

I was thinking of something like the Ewa-Marine Rain Cape, C-AF100, but it doesn't have the opening in the bottom for the tripod like your suggestion.

I see an advantage of being able to see where your fingers are at but, I use mine mostly at night so I'm working blind anyway. I think the storm jacket "may" be more durable as the Ewa-Marine looks like a plastic bag but, ....

Op/Tech makes a rain cover for different length lenses. I have used these in the past and they work well and haven't had to replace one yet.

I used the rain sleeve both on a recent trip to Alaska where it rained everyday and in Portland where it rains occasionally. FWIW, rain has never stopped me from doing photography. With weather-sealed cameras, and something like a rain sleeve I'm not overly concerned with getting a little water on my DSLR

If it is raining whatever I intended to shot can either wait or not be photographed. I won't shot in any extreme weather.

Try lenscoat, I have one and it is great in snow and rain and has an opening for a tripod or monopod, it also helps keep my hands warm due to the design.

My advice is never to shoot in the rain, cause moisture WILL get into your gear no matter what you think you can use.

A thick coat of bitumen paint will keep it dry! Ya really have to ask how to keep ya gear dry? Who looks at the weather outside for you and tells ya what shoes to put on?
