I'm looking at a canon 5D mk4, so I went to the local camera shop to check it out in person. After a conversion with the sales person,he was trying to sway me to the sony a7r11 instead. While it was a very nice camera, the cost of the sony glass was more than the canon L glass of the same specs. Now the part I could not understand was the sony camera had 5 axis IS in the camera, where the Canon does not. My point is that the canon L glass had IS but the sony glass did not. So why was the sony glass so expensive with out IS? Is the sony glass better than the canon L Glass? I was comparing the same focal lenth and f stop on each lens.
Thanks
Tom

Same reason Zeiss lenses cost more than, say, Samyang.

It's hard to say why, maybe it said zeiss on the lens! I'm a Canon fan and have been for more than fifty years I'll bet if you went for 5D Mk4 you'll be very happy, it sounds if you know what you like. go for L glass if you decide to go with Canon I'm sure you'll pick the glass for your type of photography.

MrFt, what do you think would be cheaper to make, 1000 lenses or 10 lenses?

Most of the Sony-compatible lenses are made by Zeiss, a premium brand with a long history of excellence AND high prices.
Frankly, there are compelling reasons for buying either or neither of those cameras. Before committing, read lots of reviews from sites such as Petapixel.com and DPReview.com, and watch in-depth reviews and analysis on YouTube. If you can RENT before you buy, do it. Your choice may come down to feel (ergonomics and menu intelligibility), as much as money.
I doubt that you would be disappointed with the lenses from Canon OR Sony. 5-axis In-Body IS is better below about 150mm, but in-lens stabilization is better for longer lenses.

Why would you expect the mirrorless lens to be cheaper? The sony is a full frame camera. Lens quality and price have nothing to do with being for mirrorless camera or DSLR. Whether a lens has IS or not might dictate a difference in price between lenses of the same specs and quality by the same manufacturer. But between manufacturers it means nothing. There are too many other factors determining the price/value of a lens.
Some of the Zeiss and some of the Sony G and GM lenses have OSS and some don't. Depends on which lens you were looking at. DP Review recently did a review of the A6500 which has 5 Axis IBIS. They found the IBIS gave a two and a half stop benefit over OSS alone. They actually found very little difference between OSS and no OSS used with IBIS. I would expect the results to be somewhat similar for the A7Rii

Sony has basically three types of glass, regular (no designation), G (from there bought Minolta factory), and Zeiss. On their pocket cameras look for the G or Zeiss, both very sharp. On their Sony A series, G will cost you (Minolta quality is very, very good), and Zeiss. Interesting to note here that several years ago Zeiss and Minolta teamed up to produce some jointly produced camera's. Because of that business tie today Zeiss makes AUTO FOCUS lenses for Sony. You can get manual focus Zeiss for Canon and Nikon but not auto focus. So, long story short, that Sony A7rII may have been paired with a G or a Zeiss lens.

Actually the Canon glass is better lens for lens.
In case you didn't know, the new Sony a7r3 full frame is suppose to be released this year. Of course, it will cost more. Sony just recently released its a99ii semi-mirrorless camera (Translucent) with A-mount. The A-mount lenses are expensive too, but some are reasonably priced.

Nikon's newest P lenses come in VR and non-VR. The price difference is $50.
Sony has always charged a premium for their products no matter what area of the electronics market they are a part of. They are obviously of very good quality, but even so, the prices are inflated because you are paying for the brand as well.
