I am new to this forum, but have been following your remarks. I am recently retired, getting back to photography, and am using a Nikon D3300. As I am on a somewhat limited budget, was wondering what is the best free editing software to be used on a Windows 10 laptop. I will not be doing major colorizing as I am color blind in red & green, but just want be able to crop & adjust lighting. Thanks for any help you can provide

Nikon Capture will work. It's free at the Nikon web site.

Check out the program that comes with Windows 10. It's simple with almost no learning curve. You can play around and get some nice effects.

The easiest to learn and the most comprehensive program is Faststone. Picasa is no longer available (as such), and Gimp is more than you need for your basic requirements. I have been using faststone for basic stuff for about 2 years, and I am ready to move up to a more sophisticated system. Good luck and have fun.

Faststone. Adobe Express is an online application. Faststone is fast and easy to use and is a stand alone program.

DXO Optics Pro 9 is being offered as a free download at the moment:

www.techno360.in/dxo-optics-pro-free.

While DXO not a complete editing program, it does a great job on RAW files and is worth using in conjunction with any of the regular photo editors. Version 9 is not the most recent version, but it's free at the moment and definitely worth having!
Its normally quite an expensive program.

I now use Darktable in preference to RawTherapee because of it's ability to do local edits, but Darktable isn't supported on Windows. RawTherapee though is a very good and powerful free editor for both raw and cooked (jpg, tiff, png, etc.) images. On those rare occasions when local edits are required, you can pass the output from RawTherapee to GIMP, another very good and powerful image editor (but not a raw converter).

Raw Therapee would be a good choice. For free software it is quite capable and it likely is easier to learn than Giimp.

Hi Olddad,

I sense you are simply trying to test the waters and get your feet wet. I would recommend Fast Stone and Photo Gallery, both free. Photo Gallery is built into Win 10. After playing around with them, there are a multitude of more powerful and comprehensive options. Don't dive in too quickly, just dabble the feet and get a feel for the water. After, when you are ready, post again on UHH. You'll receive many suggestions. Both are pretty friendly. Another option is to go to Adobe and download a free 30 day trial copy of Photoshop Elements. http://www.adobe.com/products/elements-family.html?promoid=KQQSC. Scroll all the way to the bottom forthe free 30 day trial.

Have fun!!
