Please comment on composition and pp. The sparrow was really there, but I'm thinking the pp might suggest that it was added later. Thanks much!

I like this Linda...I have always been a fan of shooting through weeds, trees, etc, like walking through the woods toward an opening and discovering what lies beyond!! We are given a hint through the foreground!...I like it!...(hope I explained it right!)

Thank you kindly, Frank. I seem more drawn to winter sunflowers than summer

I like the scene, but think a little cropping would help. The thee sunflowers and sparrow are the most important elements in the picture. I would crop to remove the object to the right and crop down to remove some of the sky. Crop up slightly to remove some of the busy foreground. By the way I live in Maine along the southern coast and will never move.

A slight trim re-posted below. I usually like a lot of space, but this could work.

I haven't been back to Maine for almost 7 years, but this winter Yakima is trying hard to make me feel right at home

Looking much more pleasing. Personally, I would still crop a little off the bottom. Just personal preference.

There's a lot to like here, Linda. The bird is so cute and he's actually looking at the camera! That's way cool. I like how the flowers all droop on a slight diagonal, and I really like all the angled lines of the stems. The colours are soft and natural. I think cropping some of the sky out was probably good, but I wouldn't take out any of the bottom. Those stalks need to be well grounded. My only niggle is the bridge in the background. You've done well to soften it, but it's still there, and unfortunately it pulls my eye away from the stalks. But it's there and you can't really move a bridge, can you? I really like the mountains in the background.

Thanks so much for your detailed feedback, Kathy! If you mean the structure on left, that's a broken down shed or animal shelter. With my original composition I thought including both the shed and the tank would establish the place, but maybe that's one idea too many?

The hard-to-identify stuff in the background doesn't help.

Sorry to say this one just misses for me, Linda. I like the little bird; but it is very little. I think you could do more by cropping so that the bird becomes more prominent. I know that a re-shoot is not possible; but I might have been inclined to walk about (if that were even possible) so find different angles. The straight on perspective with the stalks going uniformly from one side to the other makes the composition a bit static. I hate to say it; but this is a shot to me that "could have been".

I do understand why you chose the sunflowers. The winter withered look is, indeed, very nice. It puts us in a particular time of year and gives the photo a mood of what it would be like there. The colors are warm; but I get the impression the air was not so accommodating. Probably pretty cold out.

Thanks so much for taking a look, Erich. This was the same shoot as several close-ups I've posted: single sparrow/single flower + the two redwing blackbirds + the Gallery shot from the other day I alerted you about. I guess I'm down to the third tier of images and trying to decide if any are worthwhile, or what I might have done differently to make them so.

Your comments are very helpful!
