Try manual focus as part of the process of elimination.

You have an SD card in the camera?
Two-button reset. Check your Mode setting to make sure it isn't set for Timer, or something else inappropriate.

Was the battery although when I checked it before the shoot and it said good when I replaced it all was well thanks all

I found this on my D300, may work on yours too: Loose open the lens a little, then turn it close tightly. Once in a while, a loosen lens can cause some crazy error. Since we discuss about the Nikon D7100, when I shot video, the auto focus doesn't work, anyone knows why, and where in the manual that I can read about this issue ? Thanks.
