Has anyone used a teleconverter with the Tamron 150-600mm?
I know the AF won't work well, if at all, but I'm going to Yellowstone, and there may be instances where I need more reach.

You didn't indicate what TC, but I'd say that with a 2X, you won't be happy with the results. Even with a 1.4X, you'll probably get very soft photos.

I am very interested in answers to this question as I just got this nice lens. Haven't tried any tc's with it. Waiting for some answers.

Don't try, you will be very disappointed, if you are using it on a DX camera, it will be at the focal length around 900mm depends on what brand of camera you have, it's more than enough! Have a nice trip!

I thought as much, but I just wanted my wishful thinking confirmed by someone who has tried it..

I've tried it and I wasn't satisfied with the results. Tied both 1.4x and 2.0x. Too soft.

Teleconverters that work with satisfaction are rare with zooms and I wouldn't advise it. Teleconverters really are only useful for very expensive prime lenses. Heed the warnings of those who have tried them.

Personally I wouldn't waste time using a TC with a Tamron 150 - 600 but then I try and make money with all my photos, and the quality of this set up would not result in images that are good enough to sell. If the images are for personal use (and you don't mind soft photos) or to share on social media go for it.

Get the Tamron 1.4x matched TC, it will AF on many of the newer cameras.

Unless you have a fast zoom - like a 70-200 F2.8, 200-400 F4, 120-300 F2.8, you will sacrifice AF accuracy and speed, and a bit of image quality with a 1.4X and much more of the same with a 1.7 and a 2.0. Using a 1.4 TC on a 200 F2, 300 F2.8, 400 F2.8, 500 F4 and 600 F4 is ok. On the F2 and F2.8 lenses you can get away with the 1.7 and the 2.0.

I have a fast prime, 600mm F4, and I rarely use a TC on it. I've been spoiled by the image quality and performance of the lens without the TC. I have both 1.4 and 2.0 TCs

Sigma does have a dedicated 1.4 TC that works with their Sport (and maybe their Contempoary) 150-600. The quality is ok on the Sport, but the lens becomes an F9 (pretty dark viewfinder), and the images only look good if you stop the lens down to F8 - so the practical max aperture for good image quality is only F11. It hunts in low light or low contrast situations. I would use it only in an emergency and with a stationary subject.

I can't say if Tamron has a similar dedicated TC.

There is another issue - at 600mm, the lens on a full frame requires some skill to hold it steady even with stabilization, and if you are on a cropped camera - good luck holding that steady at 900mm. So you would probably want to take your Gitzo or RRS tripod with you. If you don't have one, then rent one. Otherwise you will be disappointed with your results.

600mm is good enough in Yellowstone; especially if you have a DX camera. While in Yellowstone you can find some animals out midday generally animals are most active near dawn and dusk when light is low. You don't want to lose the stop of a teleconverter.

Using a good tripod is more helpful than a teleconverter.

Tamron is making one especially for the second version of the 150-600, it may work on the older version too, albeit with a somewhat lower IQ.

I bought a Tamron 70-200 2.8 to use with my D500. I then wanted to buy a TC at my local photo shop who after calling Tamron was advised that the lens is not compatible with a TC. Huh?

nikonlad, It depends on which Tamron version you own and which teleconverter. According to Tamron, the newest version, SP 150-600mm G2 (http://www.tamron-usa.com/A022special/en/product/lenses/a022.html) will autofocus with the latest versions of their teleconverters, TELE CONVERTER 1.4x & 2.0x. All of this comes at a price, each of the teleconverters are $419 and $439 at B&H, the lens costs $1400. (http://www.tamron-usa.com/A022special/en/product/lenses/telecon.html) Gary
