One of my cats brought me a present. The snake is about 16 inches long and 1/4 inch fat.
My guess is a garden/garder snake. Can anyone identify it?

That's a rat snake. The color varies, there is a dark brown and then another that is almost blackl but the design is the same.

The patterns of the spots on the head and side differ among juvenile snakes, but many look very similar. I think this is a Black Racer juve (Coluber constrictor), the head plate and rising eye stripe are different from the rat snakes (genus Elaphe), and the very large eye is like racers. Both occur in your area of Florida.
