Parts of Eastern Canada were again hit earlier this week by a bad ice storm. Although damage was not extreme, several thousand people were without electricity for two days, there was an epidemic of traffic accidents, trees and shrubs were heavily damaged.

The region experienced a severe ice storm in January of 1998 which became a civil emergency that lasted two weeks because of major damage to the infrastructure such as the power grid and roads.Thousands of people moved into schools and public buildings to survive the sub zero temperatures. Dozens of hydro crews from the U.S. came up and gave Canada marvelous help in restoring the system.

Here's a look at this week's event.

Brutally beautiful and breathtaking.

I wonder if 1998 was the same year as Maine's catastrophic ice storm. Right around then, and I'm pretty sure January. I could stand outside and hear branches breaking one after the other after the other, from the weight of the ice.

My brother's home, a bit out in the country, was without electricity for two weeks. Many crews came from western U.S. to help clear. I'm very glad to hear this one wasn't as extensive for you.

Beautiful shots, Pierre. A shame it's so destructive. That last shot in particular is really gorgeous!

Yes, I'm sure it was the same event.
We were able to remain home because we heat with gas and cooked on a camp stove. The noise of breaking tree limbs was frightening.
Oddly, while living in Tampa, Fla., a few years before, we went through a hurricane. We had a major flood of our lake about a dozen years ago and the water was about six inches from getting into home.
We've been very lucky each time.
Thanks Linda.

Ice can be so beautiful on landscapes but unfortunately so much trouble. Thank you Pierre for some beautiful shots.

Pierre, nicely done! Funny you mention 98! That's when Yosemite had its great flood! We're getting it again now! 6-8 inches of rain in the next three days. Already flooding and rock slides due to the rain over the last few days. Power and tree fall also a problem! Up to 15-20 feet of snow predicted at the higher elevations!

I still have memories of an ice storm when I was a little kid. Whole world covered with a layer of ice. It was a beautiful crystal fairyland. And I fell on my rear before I made it 5 feet out the door, that hurt and getting up was a real chore.

Thanks Randy.
We had almost two full days of it. Thank goodness it was not as heavy as 1998.
