Genealogy "buffs".......here's a few FREE links you can use to start your "Research"....find out where you came from, Etc.!
I've been doing family research for a couple years and have found these links to be very helpful....
definitely not all inclusive, but enough for you to start something you may not have considered, as yet.....

You may have to "copy and paste" a couple of these links
to be able to view them.....

This first link is NEW this year....first time available...

FYI The 1940 Census is being indexed right now for easy word search. This project should be completed in a few months. The great thing about 1940 census is that there are a bunch of people that I actually knew, parents, grandparents, etc. Good place to start on family history.

Thanks for everyone's response.....I have already checked my area on the '40 census and my name is even listed here.....it was just great checking all the families I knew in my hometown......genealogy is really fun research, but takes hours and days as you build your family tree.....amazing how folks lived in the past...I have purchased the Ancestry.com link so I could research farther back than the preliminary they give.......

Have used several of these...lots of information...now what to do with it?!? haha...Actual made use of some of these when my youngest was in 7th grade working on an autobiography that turned into a huge project. Was able to get pictures of some ancestors that we didn't have before. One was a great-great-grandfather who served in the Civil War..appears to be about 17 or so....it was cool the way information literally fell out of the sky...maybe now that school is almost out for the year, I can do some "research"....

I am the family historian and genealogist for all the sides of my family. I have traced 1 back to the premiere generation when it started in Canada before going to Minnesota. I have 2 sides traced to the 1800s or earlier. I even was able to obtain lots of photos from relatives as well as information from the relatives. It is a fun thing to do but takes a lot of time. I have many years invested in it. Good luck on your research.

Here's an information link to the 1940 Census you may want to peruse:

http://www.ancestry.com/1940-census
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=2442
https://familysearch.org/1940census/?gclid=CJyH8uPerbACFSYQNAodeDpYWQ

In my research, I have found that my "grandparents", from various genealogy trees, have come from, and definitely not all inclusive:

England
Poland
Ireland
Scotland
Germany

You don't really know just how involved you can become when you actually only start out with:

Your Parents, Dad and Mom
Grandparents, Dad's Parents and Mom's Parents

Then you end up going through their parents, etc.!
We ended up with over 3,000 tracing my mother's
side of the family......now I'm into my Dad's side....

There are always others in the family doing research
that you don't know about until you start looking at
the "trees" already available on some of these sites..
espacially this site:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=search_all1.asp&clear_form=true

When you obtain a listing of the "surnames", and click-on one of them, the info. you will also obtain, near the right border, the words "Pedigree", "Family" or "Household".....the pedigree, if it has already been researched, will produce a whole family tree for you....and, it will tell who created it.....and, household will give you all the members of that particular family.....and, the "Family" will give you the members of the household with the word Pedigree after each of the names....give it a try with just your last name...you don't need anything else to create a "Search"......you'll be surprised..

Here's what a 1940 Census will look like......
just hold the cursor down and drag the sheet to view......
when through with that sheet, click "Next" in upper right corner.......
you can see the total number of sheets for that particular area.....
there's also a "zoom" bar, upper left, for enlarging the print...
=====================================
If you know the "Enumeration District - ED - " you can go right to your area and find your name......

SAMPLE:
West Virginia » Greenbrier County
View ED 13-1 (22 Pages)
