Are you a risk taker?

When you're out shooting somewhere (anywhere), do you take risky chances in order to get a unique shot? Maybe stray somewhere off the beaten path? Step on slippery rocks in a stream? The reason I ask is that I've been known to go places where I could possibly fall down a slippery slope or maybe step on loose rocks getting an out of the ordinary angle. I try to do it in the safest way possible but there are always unplanned circumstances.

An incident here in Iowa will have me thinking twice in the future. At a state park that I had visited just a couple months ago and had done just that, a photographer died on New Years Day when he climbed over a barricade to get a shot and fell off a cliff. The man lived just 35 miles from here and worked with an acquaintance of mine so it really hit home.

Whatever you do, please be careful out there.

Walt

Yes, I've been known to "take risks" for a photograph. However, those risks are tempered by a good amount of common sense, risk assessment, and judgment.

Thank you Walt...Not enough people read things like this. I for one do take some chances but never with my life.

Hey, I already had the Captain chew me out for shooting on the Railroad Tracks!!
If you stay on the beaten path, all you get are beaten path shots.
If you not RISKING it...., you're NOT GETTING it!!!

One mans risking his life....., is just another mans regular day at the office!!!

By the time you're our age, at least take a risk!

I found that my boss for the last 43 years chews me out all the time for the places I shoot - so I quit taking her with me shooting.

Right On! If you're not living close to the edge you're taking up too much room. This is the front of a T-shirt sold by The Camera Store in Calgary, Alberta.

As I age I'm getting a little more careful, I found out I don't heal as fast.

I've photographed remote areas of the Atacama Desert by myself. No cell phone at the time. Just made sure I had plenty of
water, some food and sleeping bag and wasn't more than 20 miles from some road where truckers might pass.

Lots of people I shoot with, or people who are with me when I shoot think I take chances, and maybe I do. But it doesn't seem that way to me. I know how to navigate in the bush and how to stay out of trouble. I know how far I can jump. I watch where I am going and I know how dangerous some of my subjects are. I don't do stupid things like climb fences around waterfalls or barricades around hazardous areas - I find some other way to get the shot. I stay in good shape and I know my limitations. In all the years I have been photographing nature and wildlife I have never done anything as risky as driving on the beltway around Washington, D.C. in rush hour (which is most hours).

Great (and entertaining) responses! It's called, thinning of the heard... Mother nature's way of aiding in population control and continuing the evolutionary process. However; I'm sorry it hit close to home. Love the t-shirt! I'll have to order one. :-) Happy New Year!

At 86 the only risks I take is when I take photos where it says NO PHOTOGRAPHS.

We loose some dummies now and then here in the San Diego area to death, serious injuries or badly damaged egos. Here is a shot I took a while back of some contenders for the next series of Darwin Awards. chase

I used to be very risky but age and experience with those situations as well as having to use a walker to get around have slowed me down. I am risking going across the border to Rocky Point on the Gulf of Cortez this coming week, that's the biggest risk I take these days is crossing the border.
