I am going on a trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand followed by a trip to Alaska. I take my D7100 with an 18-200 on it, a 35mm 1.8 and for the Alaska trip a 55-300. Is it worth buying a 1.4 Teleconverter and will it work with any or all of these lenses? If so, what model would you buy? Money is NOT no object.

If money is no object, then buy a fast 70-200 f/2.8 Nikor lens and then buy the 1.4x teleconverter. It's not going to work with any of the lenses you have now.

A 1.4X teleconverter will work best with your 55-300mm lens. You don't need to purchase an expensive Nikon Brand teleconverter. You can purchase a third party Brand, (Kenko) from B&H for about $140. Good luck whatever you decide.

Here is a link to another forum that says that using a TC on a 55-300 Nikon lens is not such a good idea.

The only issue with tc is that once the combination goes darker than F5.6 af is not guaranteed. I use them all the time. the first thing i would do is go to nikon usa site and look at the compatibility charts. to fid out which of these lenses will work with TC.

Teleconverters work best on lens that are absolutely first class to start with, and are intended for use with telephoto lenses not those with short focal lengths. You will also need to check compatibility. I don't think the Nikon releconverters are compatible with any of your lenses, although some 3rd part teles may be. But again, the results with your lenses may be mediocre with a teleconverter attached. Perhaps others with more specific experience with your lenses can chime in. In any case, even if tyou can find a teleconverter compatible with you lenses, the maximum aperture will now be 1 stop slower. What that will mean is when mounted on your lenses the maximum aperture for some focal lengths may exceed f/5.6, becoming f/8, and the lenses will not autofocus. Frankly, given the lenses you own, a teleconverter is not a good idea if image quality is important to you.

Agree, no question the Nikon branded will not mount on any lens you now own.

I use a Kenko 1.4, and I have no complaints. It's a lot cheaper, smaller, and lighter than a long tele lens.

You can use the forum "Search" feature for tons of opinions, some good some bad. You can learn a little about of loss of light, often a soft image, sometimes loss of autofocus, etc.

My father gave me two pointers in photography, he said, "son, stay away from tele-converters and third party glass." I am proud to say I have done both. I have done the Alaska trip and the 18-200 would be a fine choice, the 35 for interior of ship. The 55-300 which gives you reach to 450mm should cover all your needs. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

You failed to provide the link.

Kenko's table and supporting comments suggest the 55-300 should work fine with the 1.4. I can let you know in a few weeks as I have a replacement for my 55-300 arriving today and am hoping for the Kenko 1.4 Pro 300 for my birthday next week. The hint is in.

Higher than 1.4 won't autofocus and will degrade image more.

I also plan to use the 1.4 with my 200-500 on occasion, maybe on my D800.

With what you already have, I would use a Kenko MC1.4X. You should also consider CROPPING and use well applied pixel enlargement if necessary to save ISO/shutter speeds. You should also be using a monopod for stability at the longer focal lengths

The Nikon TC's won't work with the 55-300 lens. I'd buy the Kenko Pro 1.4X. Why not just buy the 18-300 f3.5-5.6 Nikon lens. I doubt if it'll autofocus with the 18-300 using a TC : f5.6 + 1 stop for the TC + f8. Only the D500 or D810 or D7200 can autofocus at f8.
