I want rename a xhd do I need to do it inside LR or can I do it on my desktop. I want to make sure LR will recognize the xhd once I re-name it.

Best to go through "File Explorer" and rename the drive there. LR will recognize any drive that is plugged into your computer.

If you re-name the hard drive without using Lightroom to do it Lightroom will not recognize the new name. Any changes made must be done through Lightroom. This information is a "foot stomper" from Ben Willmore's video lessons for the software. Good luck, you're walking in a mine field.....

The renaming of the hard drive should be done in Finder, with Lightroom closed.

I don't think you should have a problem in Lightroom but in the worst case then Lightroom would have ???? next to the folder names you can right click and show the new location and Lightroom will reconnect. If the base folder is Lightroom or pictures then show Lightroom where to find that.

It probably will not be a problem as it is not really a move, a hard drive has 3 or 4 references to it any way

disk and partition name
UUID
YourNameHere
and mount point
/volumes/yourHDD

Not positive about this: If you rename your hard drive, you will probably have to reimport all your photos back into Lightroom. When you create a Catalogue Lightroom sees only the original location. If you change the name of that location Lightroom cannot find it.

Wrong, you will not have to re-import. Just tell LR where the images are in the catalog click on the ? mark the open the drive
