Hiking through the marshes in the everglades on my way to a hammock I came across this wise man who wondered what I was doing. The first shot is my view upon arrival with the bared owl sitting with his back to the sun (Owl is lit with a fill flash) and sitting in deep shade. After a while he turned around and let the early morning light catch his face.
Thanks for looking.
Those are beautiful. What is your gear?
WOW!! Two exciting shots, perfectly done. How did you get from the shady side of him to the sunny side without scaring him away? Tiptoeing in the woods

WOW!! Your second image just blew me away. The way you blurred out the background really accentuated the owl. Just stunning.
The second one shows that your owl is a ham at heart. Great work!

Thank you murphle. I appreciate your comment. I gear was a Nikon D810, with 200-400mm lens with tc1.4 attached. Gear was mounted on tripod with Wimberly head. I used an SB-800 flash with a Better Beamer attached. What made the shot was the use of the flash and the Better Beamer. Remember the owl is sitting in deep shade and strongly back lit by the rising sun. Even with the naked eye he was just a dark spot. Knowing how to set up the flash was everything. Plus 1 exposure compensation for the camera and minus 2 compensation for the flash.
Thanks for looking.
Clean shots with sunlight are hard to get of these guys - nice work !

When I arrived he was just slightly to my right no minor change in approach. There was no cover, just the open marsh of the glades so I know he saw me coming. My lack of a direct approach may have helped. When he turned around (about 20 minutes later) I backed out into the marsh and made a big semi-circle then slowly approached on an angle. Approach took about 15 minutes and featured me sitting in the marsh to stall for time and get under the cover of the tree. Note the angle at which the photo is taken.
Both shots are different, Kinda like the rim lighting inthe first one. BUt I love the way the sunlight just hits he face in the second shot.
So no tiptoeing, just marsh sucking slurping.... :-)
Thanks so much for looking.

Thank you very much. That blurred background is compliments of my f4 lens and the fact that I have waded inside the focal length of the lens which helps with the blur. I used spot metering and (single point) and exposed for the bright face of the owl That kept everything else dark. Exposure setting really helped this shot.
Thanks for looking and for the compliment.

The first was a shot of record (I was there and saw this) The second is my "opus". I loved the light on the owl's face. That was the shot I wanted.
I appreciate you looking and the compliment.

Thanks Sylvias. I love owls, especially barred owls. (Now if I could just get a snowy!)
