Canon 1.4 Extender (teleconvertor) iii used on Canon 500mm i ("old five"): Has anyone used the new 1.4 TC iii on an old Canon lens (in this case a 500 mm)? My TC iii will not lock on.

Has anyone used the new 1.4 TC iii on an old Canon lens (in this case a 500 mm)? My TC iii will not lock on. The pin on the TC will not engage the hole on the lens. Is there any type of lubricant that can be used on the pin?
The TC pin will engage on my 100-400mm ii but I sometimes have to try several times before the TC will lock so I believe the problem is the TC.

I have the Canon 500L I F4 with the Canon 1.4xIII and never experienced an issue. I can feel the click when it's secured while turning. Maybe call Canon and see what they have to say.

Thank you. Your experience tells me that there is something wrong rather than just a question of incompatibility. I have come to the conclusion that I need to take the TC in for servicing. I can see a disaster coming if I do not.

Yes, it could be a weak spring or a slight mis-alignment - the tolerance is very small !

When you say "old" when do you mean? Or, put another way, which lens do you have? The original ef mount 500mm was f/4.5. I have a copy of it and both my Canon Mkiii extenders work with it. It's possible to use a tube between them and stack. 1400mm is a fun reach.
