Hawaiian Christmas Vacation Day One Part I

I took some leave over Christmas and camped out in Hawaii for about a week along with crashing on a friend's spare bed and a hotel for a few days. One of my friends from work here in WA was nice enough to loan me his Nikon D5000 for the trip so I thought I'd put a few pictures up and see what everyone thought. I love Hawaii because it seems that every time you turn your head there is a new picture waiting to be taken. The beauty there is truly astounding. For those that are interested, my friend included a SIGMA DG 70-300mm lens and an AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm lens along with a small tripod. Please note, I am still learning the basics of photography along with all the setting of my buddy's camera (which was sometimes a bit frustrating). I'll post a few of the better shots over the next few days. I took a lot of pictures of some of the same scenes over the first few days while playing with different settings so some scenes will probably show up a few times although with a slightly different look. I also just downloaded Lightroom and started learning the basics of post-processing my photos. I'll include the originals and the edited ones. Any feedback you all have on camera settings, original vs edited, composition or anything in general are appreciated.

I tried a lot of timed exposures with the camera. The moon was just coming up during this shot, and it was very dark. I'm amazed at some of the pictures I got when it seemed to me that it was to dark to capture a quality picture. No processing here.

What a terrific friend. If you like what the D5000 can do, check into a refurbed 7100 or 7200 which can be had these days for less that he coughed up for the 5000.

In any case, you are off to a good start. Have fun with the processing.

I know exactly where you were on Bellows, we rent one of the rental units there every year right on the ocean. Looking forward to seeing more of your posts. Here is one I took with my iPhone back in 2015.

Patriot66, I think Bellows is one of the best beaches on the island. Nice picture you have there. Looks like it was taken headed out just before the road turns away from the beach. Hope you enjoy the upcoming pictures as well. Thanks to all for looking and commenting.

Great job! Being a Lr. rookie, your PP is already good. Looking forward to seeing more.

On the last photo, it looks like you may have accumulated a bit of dried salt spray on your lens, or perhaps those are the stars just starting to show up.

Also, it is hard to focus at night. I don't know what you were trying for, but it appears your focus was about halfway to the person standing there.

KTJohnson,
Yes, those are stars. The three in a row are Orion's Belt. As far as the focus goes, basically I set the camera down, pointed it in the general direction, and hoped for the best. My knowledge of the camera and the ambient light made it really hard to tell where the real focus was.
