Hi folks.
I am seriously thinking to replace my two kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200mm) with a Nikon 18-200.
I heard the tend to have issues when pointed straight up or down.
Which is really not a dealbreaker for me.
I just upgraded from a nikon D3200 to a D7200 and I think my skills have improved a little, and want the advantages of not having to change lenses every five minutes while on vacations.
I have been shooting with my trusty 50mm lens, and I like it a lot, specially the bokeh it gives.
I do mostly portraits but I also like to go outdoors and shoot at birds, landscape etc. Imputs will be really appreciated.
Thanks!

I have the 18-200mm VRII and find it to be a great lens on my Nikon D7100. It stays on my camera 90% of the time. Have had no problem with lens "creep". The problem you are hearing about might be the original version.

The "creep" while hanging on my neck is a little worrysome.
How about sharpness?

The 18-200 is a great vacation lens. It does creep. You also need a 35mm 1.8 Prime lens.

I have the 18-200 on a D7200. Have not had creep issues in the first year, and the sharpness is good vs the Tamron 18-270 I had before.

I have the original made in Japan 18-200mm VRI, and yes, there is lens creep when the lens is pointed straight up or down. But I put up with it because the lens is pretty sharp for a lens in this price range, and it's a good everyday walk around lens. I think that Nikon did put some sort of zoom lock on the VRII version.

I originally bought my D7000 with the 18-200 and I really loved it. My daughter bought a D5300 with an 18-300 3.5-5.6 and found it a bit heavy so we traded and I paid her the small difference in price. I now have a D7200 and I rarely remove the 18-300. It is very sharp and I like the extra reach. The weight of the lens is not an issue when you use an OP/Tech sling. I've taken over 15K. images with this lens and couldn't be happier.

18~200 capture, today.

I have been using this lens as a 'walk around'. As mentioned it is a 'creeper'.

I bought a D200 shortly after it came out and a 18-200 a short time later. I've used it extensively and it is my go to walk around, family gathering, graduation day lens. It is one of the original Japanese built ones and I've never had any issues with lens creep. I did buy a used D2x and it came with one that would not focus when zoomed out past 135. A close inspection revealed that it had apparently been dropped on the filter end and damaged something internal. I gave it and an old D70 to my grand son and he's shot 1000s of pictures with it without a problem, as long as he stays within the 18-135 range. I would also invest in a 35 1.8 which are very reasonably priced.

It's a very versatile lens, very sharp, though not as sharp at 200mm as it is from 18-100mm, and as far as creep is concerned, you can always get one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050KEEW0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0050KEEW0&linkCode=as2&tag=zippeeshade-20&linkId=f0234033d17bef1e5c16cf3c94354c5c

You place it on the zoom ring, but at an angle so that it engages the non-rotating part of the barrel. You can still zoom, but the creep will be gone. You can adjust the balance between creep removal and the ability to smoothly zoom by adjusting the angle of the band to engage more or less of the barrel. Works very well.

Have one and love my 18-200. Super sharp acros the range.Have no issues with it. Zoom lenses tend to creep.
If that bothers you buy from B&H
