I'm recently retired and in excellent health. I decided on outdoor (wildlife) photgraphy as a hobby to stay active. I'm very much an amature. I've been on UHH just about everyday for the last couple months and have learned a lot from your forum. I started with a Nikon D100 last year but had trouble with the old Sigma telephoto lens focusing. Maybe 5 - 10% good images. Recently got the Rebel T3 kit. I was not happy with the Canon kit 75-300 MM so I got the Sigma 150-500 MM and love it. I have so much to learn and will appreciate C&C. I have thick skin so I can take it. I'll post a couple from the D100 and then some recent images from the Rebel.

Is this better?

You live in a wonderful area for photography! The first shot is wonderful but I'd straighten it a little. Third shot is great.
Keep shooting!
Thanks TK.....you're right about the first one. I took that before UHH and I learned about leveling it. I've since learned how to do that in Elements 9. I'll fix it.

welcome neighbor from vero beach. I shoot with a d-100 and never had focusing problems.was probably the lens.but i also own several sigma lenses and they are sharp. you are in a great area for wildlife shots.
Thanks Sinatraman. I am in a great area so I have pleanty of opportunity.
I was wrong about the lens on my Nikon D100, it's a Quantaray Tech-10 AF 70-300 MM 1:4 - 5.6 D LDO Macro. I still have it and it works just fine on Macro.
I look forward to any advice you will share with me in the future. I'll post more examples of my recent images and again welcome C&C.
Thanks! I'm glad I finally got up enough nerve to post some of my images.
Welcome to the land of eternal heat and humidity... I consider it is preparing me for a hotter after life!!
I notice you are running PSE-9 before you expend for PSE-10 I suggest you look at Topaz-labs Adjust which runs about $50. At least check it out on your PSE-9 as a plugin suite. Adjust will work many styles of magic with photos easily.
I really like your #3 shots, I would crop it 8x10 landscape form to focus on two things, the water rings and of course the bird. In the TBCClub they teach us "if it has nothing to say about the focus of your photo, it does not belong." Simply, reduce the real-estate that the eye has to look at. Please, welcome I welcome disagreement and opinions.
Sunfish, you have a good eye, great equipment, and a fine location for photographers. Oh, Yes, belong to a very helpful forum family.

Welcome to a great group! People here are very friendly & extremely helpful .... I have learned so much & have met some great friends. My mom lives in Melbourne so I come to visit as often as I can. I'm here right now, but leave tonight. Sigh
You probably already know this, but some great places near you for wild (& not so wild) life : Merritt Island refuge, Circle B Bar, & Gatorland. There are lots more so this is just a start.
Thanks. It does look better the way you did it. I'm having some trouble with cropping....either too much or too little.
I'll check out Topaz-labs adjust.
This is original (which is better as far as cropping?)
This is cropped and lightened up some.
Welcome to the UHH

there is a real good photo club up around your neck of the woods. I do not no where Also Southern Photo Supply on nasa boulevard in Melbourne is a terrific camera store to check out. They even offer classes.
Sunfish you crop looks good. you got rid of the rock in the far left background and positioned the lonely tree at the 1/3 compositing sweet spot. One other trick to try on the cropped one. We in the west read from left to right... in the photo far left is the subject then... empty sky. Try a horizontal flip and then you start in the rocky beach area and then end up high in the tree which is the major focus of the photo.
It is obvious that you have a good camera AND a good eye for photography. By the end of a year you'll be a prize winner.
