I see a lot of you talk about seeing the EXIF info on other people's images posted here. How do you do that? The only thing I ever see even on my own is just a pop-up box with the date/time, type of image and a couple of other things.

There are LOTS of ways to get the most basic Exif data, but there is TONS more data available with a proper reader. I recommend, and have used for 8 years, P.I.E. from Picmeta.com, it is free and will give you info that you had no idea was even available.

Open the jpg file in Preview, Click on the Tools Menu at the top of the screen, then click on Info. That will bring up a window with the EXIF data. BUT there are three headings on the Window, all of them show different parts of the EXIF information.

OK, I'm stupid. I often look at the properties on a file, but have NEVER looked at that third page! I normally open it up in LR to get that info. OK, so now how do I get that on someone else's image that is posted here on UHH? Do I have to download it to my computer to get that info?

Try this http://exif.regex.info/exif.cgi it's an online exif viewer. Just copy and paste the image url into the url box, check the "I'm not a robot" then click "View image data". You can also browse to files on your computer.

No, you are certainly not stupid! It depends how you view images and also what you mean by 'download'. I use Firefox as my main browser and there is an extension / add on called 'EXIF Viewer' so on UHH just click on the download link in a post and you can bring up all the EXIF data in the file. UHH strips the EXIF data out in basic images.

Clicking 'download' in a UHH post does download the image, but does not store a copy, it's just a transient thing, but you can examine all the EXIF data available. You would need to save the image to make a copy and the embedded EXIF data.

I'm sure there are equivalent things for all the other popular browsers...

Good luck

I use the plug-in/extension for Google Chrome browser. When I click the download link on a UHH picture, while I'm viewing on the white screen I can see the minimum details displayed at top of the pic: camera make, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, editing program.

But note that not all photos here will show data, period. You can strip all exif before posting online + I think some devices do it automatically.

The only difference between the free version and the paid version, is that the paid version will allow you to EDIT the Exif data if you need to, the free version is just a reader. But both give you an amazing amount of useable data to peruse. Plus, you can select the "My Tags" tab and enter any specific data line you want into it so you have quick access to only that data that may be pertinent to your needs.
I have tried LOTS of readers over the years but nothing comes close to the amount and accuracy of data the PIE provides, you will love it.

If you have Lightroom, you can see the EXIF data in the Library module.
