Today is the final day of the Carnegie Deli. This institution is closing. One of the best delicatessens in the world is gone. For those of us who have eaten there it is a sad day indeed.

Little by little, one by one, we're seeing pieces of what makes New York so special disappear. In Dec of 2014 after 110 years, De Robertis, one of the last great pasticcerie in the city closed. Tuesday of last week, what had been one of my favorite restaurants, Da Silvano closed, ending forty one years of serving wonderful Italian food. A couple of months ago it was the Four Seasons that closed. And now it's Carnegie. Before long it will be nothing but chain restaurants and the crap they sell.

We have lost so many great restaurants,Lutece--perhaps the best French restaurant in the US. Zarela--THE best Mexican restaurant north of the border, just to name 2.

Mile End deli in Brooklyn has better pastrami than was ever served at Carnegie and there are plenty of top notch Italian restaurants in NY. I bemoan the disappearance of the many small shops of NYC and their replacement by banks, Duane Reed and other chains, but of terrific restaurants, NY has more than ever.

Sad for sure. However, there will always be a restaurant in Trump Towers.

When I visit NYC, the Carnegie Deli is my first stop. Sorry to see it go, but as someone said, there is still Katz!

I visited the famous Katz's in the 50's. It was mediocre then and I have no reason to believe that it's any better now.

That's a shame. I ate there years ago. I bet there will be long, long lines.
