Hoping to pick up a new lens (Nikon 200-500mm) to ring in the New Year. Does anyone know of a photography retailer that has significant Holiday sales to lessen the financial blow?

There are occasional sales authorized by Nikon for a couple hundred dollars. Also, check Nikonusa.com. They frequently have sales on refurbished lenses (refurbished by Nikon with warranties). Good luck!

Check on the Nikon site, they've extended their holiday sale for 5 days. And since the Amazon Wagon/Santa's Sleigh just arrived, folks will be dumping gear on the E-Bay.

Unlikely you'll find that winner on sale. Doubtful there are refurbs yet.

Check eBay.

Nikon puts some lenses on sale in March every year. But not the high rollers.

Update: better hop on this one if OK with slightly used:

Update 2:

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/refurbished-camera-lenses/af-s-nikkor-200-500mm-f%252f5.6e-ed-vr-refurbished.html

You might see if you can find refurb at Cameta or Adorama if you want longer warranty.

Dang. Had a GAS attack while perusing the Nikon refurb lenses on sale.

Gave my 55-300 to my daughter-in-law when I got my 28-300. Regretted it soon after due to the weight of the 28-300 on my D5300. She gave me her 55-200 but it pretty much sucks. Tried to get the 55-300 back but she refused...called me an Indian Giver.

Thinking I need it for upcoming Panama Canal cruise. At $149 how could I not?

(I have the 200-500 but this isn't a wildlife focused trip so I don't want to haul that monster.)

Nikon controls the price of their products so unless Nikon offers a rebate there will be no reduction in price. An authorized dealers cannot do anything for you. So if you buy new Nikon the price is fixed but they cannot control the other stuff the company will offer with the new product, like memory cards, etc. So look for the goodies as a package deal.

As long as that lens is in heavy demand, and it is, you will not see any sales on that lens. My opinion is that for the price, you cannot beat it. I own one and it is as sharp as my 300 2.8 and 200-400 4. And at it's price point it cannot be beat. Suggestion, do not wait for a sale as you might miss some really interesting photo's by that time. Nikon might reduce the price by $100 to $200 in a couple of years during there twice a year lens reduction.

Greentoe will pout you in touch with a reputable dealer who deals in USA products. The problem is, the seller will charge you a restocking fee (15% - 20%) if you want to return it.
B&H or Adorama does not charge a restocking fee.

If the lens is not grey market, Nikon sets the pricing and does not allow pricing competitions between their authorized dealers. Having said that, most of the major dealers (Adorama Cameta, B&H and some locals) get around the "pricing controls" by throwing in additional filters, bags, cases, and other 3rd party accessories for slightly more than the original price of the lens. Also, often you can pick up a used Nikon lens at B&H, Cameta, Adorama, and especially KEH for a decent price and while they won't warrantee the lens long term it will usually have at the minimum a 30 day warrantee that allows you to get the lens and check it out. There are also many local dealers that sell both new and used. Keep in mind that a grey market lens may seem like a good deal (and usually is) until it need service.

Prices are controlled by Nikon. If you want to take a chance, look for a gray market lens.

Used from Adorama

Or, plan ahead.
