This gentleman was have an interesting conversation with himself as he crossed the street by the mall.

He's probably suffering from schizophrenia. As a photograph, I like this one better than the others, as he is active, rather than sitting passively.

Good catch. I still feel that people with this level of mental illness needs to be taken care of and should be institutionalized in a safe clean and caring facility for their own safety.

In most cities, there are shelters and food kitchens for homeless. Many homeless prefer to be on the street.

There is nothing in the photo to suggest mental illness.

If you take into account his general circumstances, arm gesture, angry expression, and the talking to himself, it's a strong indication that he's having an angry discussion with someone we can't see. It's possible he's just holding an internal discussion as we often do, but taking everything into account, it's much more likely that he's arguing with an internal voice--i.e. auditory hallucinations.

I agree, many homeless do prefer to be on the street.
