I am headed to London in May. I am taking my Canon but have been looking at lenses for a while and wondering if I should upgrade before I go. What lenses would you take on a trip like this? London and surrounding area so I need a wide angle and something with a zoom also. Suggestions? I probably can't afford Canon lenses (or only one). I have the 18-135 that came in my kit. Thank you in advance!!

In all reality, you're rarely going to need a long focal length lens, unless you are interested in details of the clock, Big Ben, which incidentally is the name of the bell, not the clock. If I were going to London and had to take only one camera and one lens, I'd take my D800e and 28~300. If I could have two, add the 20mm. In most of the photos I do around town here, I use the 28~300, but rarely past the 150mm focal length.

You might just take a walk around your home town, or neighboring community and shoot some photographs, pretending to be a tourist. That should, by example, give you a good idea as to what you would need.

The 18-135 works for me.

I'd take only my 17-50 f2.8 Sigma on my D5300 (APS-C) on that trip. I have many alternatives.

If I thought it worth taking my D800 (FX) instead I'd take 24-85 only.

(My 28-300 is one I now leave at home due to weight, which is why up till a few months ago I'd take the D5300 over the D800. But I now have a new toy...a Micro 4/3 Lumix GM5 which is what I would now take on a non-wildlife trip involving air travel.)

PS: My wife and I love England. We lived in a small town for a year an hour train ride from London in the early 80s. We we to London at least once a month. In London we both love the plays and she goes to Harrods while I do the museums. Outside London the estates are awesome. We object to The Eye as an eyesore...built after we left. But we'd probably cave in and ride it next time.

We were just in London and Scotland in September. I took my Canon with my 24-105 f4L, which I used almost all of the time, and my 16-36 f2.8L II, which I used for landscapes in the Scottish Highlands, that is when the clouds lifted enough to see some land. Got some nice shots of the River Spey with the 24-105, we actually had two sunny days :P The shore shot is from Broadford, Isle of Skye, when the rains finally lifted for a few hours:)

K, I was in London a few years ago and did 90% of all my photography with a 24-105 and a 50mm 1.4(for the indoor stuff).
If you're trying to save on gear I would just take your 18-135, that will take care of 90% of you needs. I would buy a Canon 50mm f1.8(they are only about $100) to handle indoor duties. Use your pop-up flash when it's allowed.
It's nice to have a ton of fancy, expensive, fast and wide glass but it's just not necessary!
Have a great trip!!!

Add the affordable EF-S 10-18 and you have a great and light ultra wide. I use it on my APS-C body. You should be well covered. Enjoy the trip and don't miss the theater and a good glass of Best Bitter.

I have a great 18-135 EFs. I also have the up grade 15-85 EFs and UWA 10-22 EFs. I love to shoot with a two lens kit so if you don't have a UWA I would add one but, I am a UWA shooter. Buy used off sidewalk or refurbished Canon 10-18.

Expect to see buildings, streets, bridges, signs, statues, vehicles, people, birds, dogs, cats, trees, gardens, &c., so you'll want the appropriate equipment if you wish to photograph any of these subjects. Enjoy your trip, and return soon!

Add on a nifty fifty, I concur with the above. The 18-135 is an excellent walk around lens.

I would take a compact with a decent zoom.

The key to traveling is to travel LIGHT, what you have is great.

What camera has the O.P. got, I don't see it mentioned. If it's a crop format that'll make that 18 almost 29mm equivalent. If so I'd go for a wider angle (24mm or wider) and maybe consider hiring one.
