This must be a different James than the one I thought it was...I thought it was the one that is one of the most respected people on the Hog, the one who posts some of the best shots on the Hog, the one who has some of the best narratives on the Hog, the one who is always so nice and helpful to those on the Hog, the one whose health we worry about on the Hog, the one we miss WHEN YOUR NOT ON THE HOG!!! The James I'm talking about is a great photographer, but obviously a greater human being!! The James I'm talking about gets more with less, than most get with more! The James I'm talking about has put being a good person ahead of being a good photographer, and invested more into it! The James I'm talking about is the reason a lot of us are on the Hog, no false bragadarrio..(sp), and not a bad word for anyone! The James who can offer a critique, but not demean! And most important, the James I'm talking about, is the one who loves life!!!!..............OH WAIT....that IS you!!!.................it's an honor to have you on my list of friends, even if it's only on the Hog so far!
A Merry Christmas, and a Happy Healthy New Year to you and yours my friend!!

I always look forward to your photos. It's not the camera, it's the person behind it. Merry Christmas

I agree with what rlaugh said! And I tried raw, it was overwhelming when I put into computer, there was no one to tell me what to do! No book, no instructions, nothing. But a camera is just a tool, and I started with a Minolta 110. The capture is in our eye and mind first. Glad you are still taking photos. I will always take photos. It is just a part of who I am! And I love your Pensacola Beach sunrise! Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

You and I have the same camera, James, and you are the reason I bought it after going to your site and viewing all of the beautiful pictures that you
took with your Sony HX300. I was really blown away by the quality of your pictures, and it helps that you really have a good sense of composition.
Merry Christmas!

As has been written before on this website, the most important piece of equipment in photography is the human eye. If a photo is pleasing to you, it was worth doing. I have a T3i and I am quite happy with my photos. Enjoy your photography and Merry Christmas. By the way, your photo is very nice.

Your photography is an your expression of art. Not everyone likes Salvador Dali's work and some are bored to death with Leonardo di Vinci. Your photographs, whether enhanced by photoshop or straight out of the camera, are yours. They have as much value as the professionals' work. (and in many cases, more so.)

"...since I've read so many posts here that claim only RAW processed images shot on big sensored cameras are of any value. Many touting they use only the most expensive processing software. Without these, you have no chance for respect."

I've only been a member of the UHH for a couple of years, and don't recall seeing any posts quite that blunt, but sometimes it is implied. Just remember whom ever expresses that belief either doesn't have to worry about costs, or ignores the situation and some day it will raise up and bite him! When this type thought gets posted, just remember "...there ain't any cure for stupid..." [Author unknown] but mostly correct. Actually there is one cure but it's illegal.

For most of us photography is just another hobby, and I believe most of us try to control our costs so that our hobby doesn't impact the more critical people and things in our lives.

Hi Folks, it's been awhile since I've posted an image. I've been a bit intimated and hesitant to post lately since I've read so many posts here that claim only RAW processed images shot on big sensored cameras are of any value. Many touting they use only the most expensive processing software. Without these, you have no chance for respect. The rest of us are otherwise just wasting our time taking snap shots. I suppose this it true and I agree. But I'm never going to be able to afford a camera like that. So chances of me getting any respect are zilch. I can accept that and I've come to except it. So should I give up? I do love photography, I love the hobby, so I've decided to press on despite my handicap of poor gear. I'm not going to give up, I'm going to keep trying to seek out those WOW shots, I'm still going to proudly lift my camera and take my shots right along with those who snicker when I raise my camera. I'm going to be the cheerleader for those of us who can't afford much. I want tell those folks to be proud of your efforts. Take those family photos, vacations and special occasions. Buy better gear when you can but if you can't, keep on taking pictures. Take the time to look at every photographers images to help you learn. You can do a lot if you just try, but never be ashamed in what you do. Photography is a tool tocapture moments in time, so capture those moments and enjoy doing just that. Save your images (good or bad) enjoy them for years to come. With Christmas approaching, I hope I have encouraged everyone to get your camera out, doesn't matter what brand or it's expense...just take those pictures. You'll be glad you did. Now this image is one I took on a cheap camera as dawn broke over Pensacola Beach Florida. I captured this moment in time...the sun has just arose on this day and is giving it's warmth. A day when the Emerald colored sea was choppy, to early for beach goers, the air was crispy and clean. A beautiful beginning to the day. God Bless you and a very Merry Christmas to you all, enjoy the Holidays with lots of photos.

Well said, James, from another photographer who shoots "on the cheap" because he can't afford the fancy stuff. I shoot with a Canon SL 1; an old, used Canon SX 1; and have just acquired a used Canon SX60. That's pretty low-budget. I feel that I get decent photos, and some others like them from time to time, too. Actually, I don't want the big, heavy-to-carry gear because it would severely severely limit where I could go, and how far, because of the weight (not to mention the expense). I'm also happy in the less expensive arena.

That's a nice photo, by the way. --John

Martino said it best in the last 2 paragraphs. Keep shooting, even if it's with a simple cardboard, pinhole camera!

pp work james. your post is very inspiring and made me feel good. i don't pay much attention to what kind of equipment
anyone uses, and i certainly don't have any big fancy cameras to use myself...i just love photography and the challenge of it,
and the patience and perserverance it takes to get a decent shot. thank you for posting you beautiful shot and explaining why
you took it and like it, and thank you for your inspiring message. merry christmas and wishes for many blessings and tons of great
shots in 2017!

Merry Christmas back at you!

I ignore the snobbish side of the experts on the hog as they often do have good advice once they have state their superior knowledge, filed of vision, and equipment! Like the guys who always get the newest Porsche or Ferrari........
A great opportunity, a great eye, a great perspective, and just being in the right place at the right time are, IMHO, equal to great equipment!
