Equipment theft

I have read post from time to time about equipment being stolen, I assume even while out shooting. Fortunately I haven't had that experience but wondering how common that is? Can anyone can offer advice as to where not to shoot.

Also does anyone know of any insurance that will cover lost or stolen equipment? I guess it would be pretty difficult to prove that to an insurance agency.

I live in a third-world country known to many as Miami, Florida and you and you have to consider yourself lucky that the flowers you planted in the yard yesterday are still there the next morning. Now I have not had any equipment stolen but we have had three cars stolen in the past 11 years. I never set anything down when I am not at home. The recent arrivals in this area have brought their hometown chaos with them.

I haven't had anything stolen from me ever, although I don't have much equipment and live in a safe place. I think you can probably judge if you are going into an area where you don't feel comfortable having your camera out.

But to protect your equipment you can get a policy that is considered a rider to go along with home owners or renters insurance. You could probably even take out a policy with a company if you didn't have another insurance policy with them. Talk to your agent where you have home owners, renters, or even your car insurance and see if they have anything. I work for a Farmers agent doing office work and they do all kinds of policies including some for your major appliances in your home if you want. It is always something to look into if you have equipment that might be hard to replace if it was stolen. When I get into heavier gear I do plan on looking into getting an insurance policy.
I am also looking into protection of the kind that Wabbit mentioned, but that is an entirely different conversation.

That is no where near Miami. That's in the "Deep South" of Florida which is much further north of Miami. That's the funny thing about Florida the more north you travel the more southern you get. It's something you must experience to completely comprehend. Miami is an international city a virtual melting pot like New York but much smaller and more concentrated. The crime issues here are well-known.

Thanks everyone… I live out in the country of Tennessee, pretty safe area. I have ventured into Nashville, Chattanooga, and Memphis, but usually during the day. I was out in Chattanooga until 1:00 a.m. getting in some night shooting. When realized the time, I noticed that I was being followed by a couple of suspicious guys, and was about 3 blocks from my car. Fortunately a security guard on the aquarium grounds where I was shooting saw what was happening and gave me a ride on his little golf buggy. He told me that the area was a campground for homeless after 11:00 p.m., everyone be ware of the area late night, early morning.

I will check into making an addition to my homeowners policy. Wabbit… not sure if I'll take your route yet, just might shoot myself. Thanks for the suggestions everyone

That's where a monopod and a nice heavy ball head can be handy.

I have a rider on my homeowners policy for full replacement cost $0 deductible on my camera and computer gear for theft. If it's damaged beyond reasonable cost it needs to come up missing.

there is also a service whose name i can not rember where you register your cameras. aparently among the meta data or the exif data a camera's serial number is reported. it=f your camera gets stolen, you report it to the service, it searches all photos posted on he internet for your cameras serial number. if it finds one that wasn'tposted by you, it will notify you and the local police dept to report the location of a stolen item. I think it was in either popular photography or shutterbug magazine maybe 6 months agq.
