I been reading the posts for a year or so now, this is first posting. I'm from Ohio and have had a Nikon D50 for years, taking family, pet, and esp luv macro photos! Going to Europe this fall and looking for a smaller camera. Thinking about Nikon coolpic p510. Has anyone out there used one? Thanks any input will be greatly appreciated!

I have used my D50 for years and do appreciate the size concern. I also carry a Nikon D6200 point and shoot with some adjustment features that seems to work pretty well. It fits in my shirt pocket and is 16 megapixels which is enoufh for most enlargement these days. Hopes this helps.

I have the P500 which is just the predecessor of the 510. I love my camera. I can get all kinds of things from macro of flowers to great pics of the moon with mine. If you are used to certain features like using raw, or a cable release the 510 doesn't have those capabilities. I think the slowest shutter speed I can get on my camera is about 2 seconds. I am using my 500 to work my way into a DSLR and I am now feeling some of those limitations since I want to experiment, but I can do a lot of things with it that I could never do with a regular P&S. If I were going to Europe I don't think I would hesitate for a minute to take my 500 with me, because I know that I would be able to get some amazing shots with it. If you don't want to take the D50, I certainly feel that the 510 would be a great camera to take along. With that zoom you have so many great possibilities of getting shots of things from up close or far away.

Thanks for your input! I am leaning toward the p510 definitely. It is a little larger than I'd like, but it has goodHd 1050 video!

HI kathlpn

You might look for a thread on this forum called bridge camera shootout or similar. All kinds of pics from different makes of cameras . Some real eye openers in the bunch.Thread was started by Horseart and another to showcase what bridge cameras could do.

Hi Kathlpn, you could try a PM to 'Horseart'. I am pretty sure she has just purchased a p510 recently and I know she would not put you wrong. Darryl

I love my 510. Light weight. Features from full auto to full manual. Won't take filters over the lens and no remote shutter release. I bought the sexy red one....lol

I will revert to my old standby - read reviews. If you go to snapsort, you can specify which cameras to compare. You will spending a chunk of change on whatever you get, so don't rush into it. I would give excellent recommendations to all the cameras I have owned, but an experienced reviewer will detect highs and lows in different models.

Give some serious thought to the OLYMPUS SP 800 UZ ($299 o less) Its claim to fame is its 30X zoom. It is a point and shoot with many, many programs. It is very versitile. STUDY
the owners manual and practice, practice, practice before you leave.
I have spent some time in Europe and you cannot always get up close for many of the things you will be seeing, i.e. Big Ben and the eiffle (?) tower; on the other hand its good for portraits, too.
Study about the places you are planning to visit.

I've used my P500 in most of my travels and have been very happy with the results. Only regret is that I never took the time to learn all of its capabilities first. The bracketing feature would have been great at the Vatican. I first tried the HD video feature not long ago in Viet Nam and was very impressed with the outcome. If you plan on using the video, make sure it's set on the HD setting and not the HS setting. One of the neat things is that you can continue to shoot stills while in video mode. Enjoy!

Hi and pardon the digression here. I just got that P510 and like everything about it so far except the video capture time length. It seems to only shoot 29 continuous minutes of video. Is that correct? Any way around it? I'm using a 16 gig, Class 10 card, formatted each time, fully charged battery.

because p+s cameras and even bridge cameras have large depth offield and isnearly impossible to get blurry backgrounds, i am going to sugest a different alternative. look at sony or olympus mirrorless cameras. small but with aps sensor. you can get an adapter to fit your nikon lenses on it.

The Sony HX9 has on option to do blurry backgrounds. It actually does make a difference, but, of course, there is no adjustment of it.
