I probably should have said this in my original post:
* I believe the US colleges put too much emphasis on winning sports.
* ND football has had some discipline issues that fit neither the school nor winning.
* This ad is very clever.

When you find something that makes a lot of money, you go for it.
And the alumni love the sports (seemingly more than the education, for most of them), which means more money.
