always format in-camera, just to be on the safe side (if something goes wrong in the computer, while formatting, you could easily damage the camera behind repair. I would not format in one camera and then use the card in another, as formatting is a way of "priming" the card for that specific camera!
I erase the memory card at the computer, but always format it in the camera.

I thought that too, but once I accidentally used one of my SCHC cards in two of my Nikons without formatting inbetween (D610 and either the D300 or D3X). When I put the card in my card reader, there was two folders on the card, one for each of the cameras.
Just to be clear, I use a SDHC-CF adapter in both the D300 and the D3X so I only need to carry about one type of memory card.
