I was stationed there when I was in the Navy and actually got "island fever", a condition where I felt like I was marooned and missing what was going on, on the mainland. That was in 1961-62. Also, too poor to afford anything off base. However, now I love the place as a vacation destination, but would prefer not to live there. If it was not for the distance (I live on the East Coast), I would visit there yearly.
FWIW, Hawai'i is the most remote population center on the planet.
ALL of them. Otherwise they would be dead.
Left there in 1953 after three years and have never regretted leaving. My only big regret about Hawaii is that I didn't discover cameras until 1960
