I have 100's of slides from the 60's and 70's that I would like to review, many of people, memories of family and friends, some that I'd like to eventually print and pass on as gifts.

My old Kodak projector no longer works, would like to find an inexpensive way to review the slides, possibly have select ones professionally printed. I've been away from photography for awhile. Does anyone have recommendations for equipment, sources, etc.?

How about an inexpensive hand held, battery operated slide viewer?

Quick and simple is a small slide viewer often found in thrift shops. Uses a milk glass or plastic behind slide with you supplying the light, say almost any incandescent lamp behind the milk plastic. The color temperature of the bulb your choice, but it will definitely affect the color balance, so choose a full spectrum tungsten filament light to see the colors more accurately. Color temp. say 3200o Kelvin, probably one of the best choices, if a fresh bulb. Some of these viewers are stack loaders holding 36 slides for quicker review.Carefully blow compressed air on slides and interior of viewer to keep them and the viewer as clean as possible.

There was another inquiry this morning on the SAME topic. Click on newest topics, scroll down 2 or 3 messages to find it. Topic is about scanners.

My slide projector still worked but after we selected about 200 of our favorites, we sent them off to Scan Cafe. Several weeks later they came back ( from India? maybe) along with a CD containing the digital version. The copies were OK, not great, but OK. Considering my photographic skills back in the day, I was satisfied. The actual review of several boxes of slides with the old projector and our kids was a ton of fun.

If you can rent a scanner, scan them and throw out the bad ones. That's what I did, and I had thousands of slides in different formats.

I recommend sending them to ScanCafe http://www.scancafe.com/ and let them digitize. They'll charge much less than buying a limited machine. You'll get a DVD(s) with all the restored and digitized images that you can view on your computer, print, send out for printing, or project with a modern projector. I think I paid about $0.30 per image. They did an excellent job on my last batch, some of which were 90 years old, came from my Japanese friends family's old albums. (They even restored a few that had too much "hypo fade." (Seriously, you could put them to your nose and still smell the hypo.)

Ha Ha- yes indeed. Getting lean and mean.

Actually the projector belonged to my father. Fired it up and it worked :) He had a bunch of slides that I looked at.

However I still have a few things left like a V 700 Epson Scanner with extra scanning trays. Have been hanging onto it just in case- you know how that goes. But I haven't used it in over a year. Probably time to let it go.

BTW- I put your film in the mail today.

To review slides, I often use a small light box and a magnifying loupe. You can find both fairly cheap online.

Too bad that scanner would be a giant pain to ship ;-)

Scanning is different from review. A slide projector on ebay would be good.
