Does anyone have any wisdom on what type of Go Pro camera to buy? I notice there is quite a price range and I am wondering what that's all about. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

GoPros are ridiculously over-priced for what they give you. There are much better options out there like the ThiEye or Wimius models that cost a fraction of the GoPros price and offer the same, and in many ways better, videos and images.

Using a GoProHero 4 Silver and there's nothing it can't do that ALL other Action Cam cameras can do----
Have used for about 1-1/2 years and it's virtually indestructible

My husband wants to set it up down by our pond to videotape the waterfowl flying in and out. He said that the one he was looking at would hook up to his smartphone so he can operate it from the comfort of the living room. I don't think he is going to be happy with the quality, but I figured that he would have fun with it when he goes fishing. Do these other models connect to smartphones?

I have wished I had one when I go cross country skiing. Does the GoProHero 4 Silver have the improved image stablization?

Absolutely, I use both brands myself, the Women's permanently mounted in my Jeep as a dashcam.

From what I've seen, the extra cost of the top model isn't worth it, at least as far as I'm concerned. The foreign action cameras are much cheaper than the real thing, and that's why GoPro is in financial trouble. As always, I'd look for reviews and comparisons.

Has he considered one of those "trail cameras" that take stills or video when they detect movement?

GoPro is pretty much the Gold standard in action cameras. Among other things, they have the widest support of accessories of any action camera. Heck, you can even buy mounts in Walmart! A key question. Does he want 4K? If not, even a 3+ Silver would probably do fine. You can still pick these up for $200 or less.

I'm using a Garmin VIRB. Similar to the GoPro, and uses the same accessories. It has a manual record on/off switch, which is nice. I *think* it can connect to a smart phone, but I haven't tried that yet.

Please post comparison evidence from an independent source which will verify what you are saying.

I too was interested in getting a GoPro but after looking this one up, immediately bought it. Sounds great and with 70% off, it's a steal. Thanks for posting it.
