Hello to the group!
My friend has a high end Nikon camera and lens, I noticed how sharper his digital images were. I have a 50D and the stock 18-55mm lens. What Canon lens or other brand could I buy to equal his. A lens that has a wide angle and mild telephoto. Thank You. Jim

I am interested in the answers you get also but would like to know more about your friends equipment as well, what do you mean by "high end"? That could be a D 40 depending. Not being mean but do you feel you two have a similar skill set in photography?

First off, you would need a camera that equals his in resolution and then the equal to his lens, only the Canon version, simple!

Since neither his camera nor his lens is up to it, he need not get a Canon at all. The easy way would be just obtain the same Nikon gear the friend has. Or perhaps ask the friend for help with less expensive Nikon equivalents.
I guess I'm not really sure what he has, I'll have to find out.

yes, it is important if you want an honest and worth while answer :-)
I have a 60D and find that the EFs 10-22 and 15-85 is surgical sharp. But I can show you a portrait that was shot with entry level and kit lens that is proven award winning. So skill set needs to be dialed in along with LUCK.

We can easily recommend corresponding Canon equipment, but you'd first have to know what your friend is using. You likely can 'up the performance' of your current 50D with a lens change rather than both a lens and camera body.
It's a Nikon D7100. He has quite a few Nikor lens. I have been in amateur photography (film & slide)for 50 years, then I bought this Canon 50D DSLR and had to relearn all about digital photography. Still learning.

Used and refurb D7100 cameras are inexpensive. Buy one, and take your pick on one of the many Nikon lenses that might suit your needs.
If he has quite a few lenses, that will be a challenge to recommend "A lens that has a wide angle and mild telephoto" to addresses "how sharper his digital images were". Your camera has a 15MP sensor while his has a 24MP sensor as well as 61 focus points. There's several variables in the cameras beyond a lens to lens comparison that will defeat a straight apples to apples comparison.
Regarding your request, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens would be a reasonable consideration, both for cost and an upgrade in performance to your 18-55. Nikon has a number of 18-to-x lenses that are all very sharp, VR-enabled and differ mostly based on size and cost rather than different performance. For cropped sensors, Canon does not provide the same quantity of choice with similar performance. You might be better served looking at two lenses covering wide and normal to mild telephoto.

He mentioned in his post using a Canon (50D), so I replied to get a Canon equal!

He needs a newer, better, camera. At that point it need not be Canon.
Here's the reason to look elsewhere:
What's the point of the thread? "My friend's got a really great camera that produces really great images....BUT I DON'T WANT THAT!!!"

"What Canon lens or other brand could I buy to equal his."
You missed that?
