I can pretty much guarantee that who ever wrote this and is doing this in practice has never waited on a table.

My son was a waiter at Red Lobster and couldn't make ends meet because some people just didn't tip at all.....and it wasn't because of poor service.

Waitstaff in a lot of states can legally be paid less than the minimum wage because they get tips, which count as income. The tips are essential to their making ends meet. Stiffing the waitstaff is really taking money from the poor.

This is heartbreaking, without tips a server cannot live and has to have another job. I hope other diners make fun of these cheapos.

They don't dare because of who they are.

I am not sure what the going rate is here anymore. Back when I was waiting tables, it was one-half of minimum wage. When you got your W2, there was a printed anticipated amount in the tips section.

There are lots of places that are allowed to pay below minimum and avoid other requirements.

Red Lobster paid my son about 2.24 anticipating decent tips. He was lucky to average $10.00 and it wasn't enough to pay his lease. Too many would leave nothing at all or $1 tip on dinner for four. In the case of chains like this, the European system would be better. In the case of individual restaurants, the current system is probably better. However, chains probably would not like the European system because the higher prices on the menu would drive the freeloaders away.

Wow, that's terrible. Our local Perkins is very good, my mother and I go there often and always leave $10.00, I think our bill usually comes to about $24.00 or so. If you were ever a waitress or server, you know the woes and overtip.

I enjoyed going to Perkins restaurants when we visited our daughter when she was going to school in New York. We always tip 20%. If everybody did that, wait staff would do well.

I double the amount of the bill and round up, so $33.50 would equal a $7.00 tip. I've seen some bills with the tipping amounts computed at the bottom, like 10% = , 15% = , 20% = . Good idea. I occasionally go to breakfast with a couple of friends. It's almost laughable to see them trying to figure out how much each of us owes. I just wait for them to do all the calculating and pay my share.

Many, many, many moons ago, when I was in high school, I was a waitress. The going pay at that time in PA was $.80 an hr., those tips were nice! :)

99% of the people who work as waitresses do a good job and deserve a decent tip. That's how they make a living. If you "charge" them because they didn't wait on you like you were royalty your pretty selfish and should just eat at home. They should get 20% minimum in my book.
