Hi: I'm new here and new to photography as well. I have been using Nikon D7000 for some time and want to switch/upgrade to Canon thinking of 5DIV or III. I recently went with my friend to do some photography of birds and I really liked his Canon 5DSR and I felt that Canon was more user friendly. Your suggestions will be very help full.

Type for type, the differences are what you observed: ergonomics. The name over the lens mount makes little difference to image quality.
My advice: Put some time into checking both ergonomics, and the overall system. Both are good, but personal preference would make a difference more than brand name.

Nikon or Canon they are both top rate cameras. Don't forget other DSLR's camera brands and mirrorless as well.

Do what you want. But at least compare apples to apples. The Canon 5diii is closer to the Nikon d4, or D800. Your D7000 doesn't compare to what your friend has.

Excellent answer. Ergonomics is something few take into consideration when purchasing a new camera, and published camera reviews seldom discuss. But having the technically most advanced camera in the world means little if you can't get comfortable operating it.

You need to compare his 5D to the Nikon D810.

I found the same thing when I originally bought my camera. I too, felt Canon's setup was more user friendly. Also, it was more comfortable in my hands. I can figure out just about anything, but when a friend of mine asked for my help with her Nikon, I couldn't for the life of me find what she needed (she has the D750). Both companies however, have excellent cameras and customer service.

I got my D7200 instead of a Canon equivalent, because I preferred the Nikon's ergonomics. Also, the Nikon was a little bit lighter than the Canon. But as for brand vs. brand, both are very good brands, each has its niche, and Canon's seem to be the choice for birders and action/sports photographers. Nikons excel with portraiture and landscape photography. Make your choice according to the type of photography you do or want to do, then check out the ergonomics. And don't forget, the new Nikon D500 should be a very good camera for sports and action photography. That said, don't automatically opt for Nikon or Canon. Sony and Pentax make some fine DSLR cameras, however I'm not familiar with either brand's DSLR's. Check them out, though. No flies on either one.

My impression, too: "I felt that Canon was more user friendly."

My suggestion: Rent to try before you buy. Your use will guide you.

Note: I've read that Nikon products cost more than similar Canon products.

You seem already leaning toward Canon gear. You cannot go wrong here.

Good luck.

What lenses do you have for your D7000? You will have to invest in new glass if you switch.

I switched from Nikon to Canon because the controls I use most fit my hands better. I photograph wildlife, so the fit was important.

I have Nikkor 18 - 270 for regular use. Used my friends Tamaron 150 - 600 for birding and liked it.

I don't believe there is a Nikkor 18-270. Did you mean Nikkor 18-300 or Tamron 18-270?

Do your research and settle in on two units. Then, if you live in an area where you have options - RENT the Nikon one day and the Canon the next. Shoot under the same conditions, if possible. I'm a Canon 6D owner and I'd love to have the 5D Mk-IV, but you may love one of the FullFrame Nikons too!

Weigh the switch from crop sensor to full frame. Almost all of your crop sensor glass becomes useless an a FF...see if you really want or need FF.
