Would a pistol grip on the camera be an aid for quick framing while using a gimbal?

I'd like to see a picture of that.

I personally don't think so. I can frame faster with my gimbal than I can with my ball heads.

I think a Gimbal is faster than a Pistol Grip. Had both and sold the Pistol Grip.Use my Gimbal.

Good idea for my third hand. Whether hand held or on a gimbal, my right hand is on back bottom focus and the shutter release while the left hand is on the zoom and focus rings. Properly balanced, a gimbal moves freely and quickly.

Why would you even consider adding another axis of motion to a gimbal head? That would be redundant, as well as clumsy to operate with any load mounted.

Yes. Look at Manfrotto

I've seen them used in photo workshops and the action is very fast.

Have you ever been to a workshop where they put a pistol grip ON A GIMBAL?

Just use the Gimbal on its own, you do not need the pistol grip.

It has a safety load of only 11 lbs. Would be pushing the limits with a DSLR and long lens/long zoom lens.

As a long user of a gimbal I can't imagine how a pistol grip could possibly improve upon one's ability to quickly frame an image with a gimbal.

I think he is talking about using both at the SAME TIME.

Of course. He plainly said he wants to put the pistol grip on the camera, so obviously the lens is mounted on the gimbal. And he made no mention at all of a ball head! As long as it’s properly balanced, the camera/lens should move easily on the gimbal, not much point in adding a pistol grip.

I can't imagine why it would be needed or helpful.

Set up properly on a gimbal, a camera and large lens can be moved with a very light touch... to track subjects or whatever.

There are simple "pistol grip" attachments and there are "pistol grip style tripod heads"... two different animals.

I'm not a fan of pistol grip style heads... which are essentially just small ballheads with a spring-loaded locking mechanism. Not sure if it would even be possible, but I certainly wouldn't try to combine one of those with a gimbal.

Plain old pistol grip attachments can be helpful when hand-holding.... but I see no purpose using one along with a gimbal. But, hey, I'm an old dog and occasionally someone teaches me a new trick!
