Late-instar Red Admiral caterpillars (Vanessa atalanta), one sleeping in her silk tent wrapped in a nettle leaf, and another grazing on a stinging nettle plant. Both near life-size.

Photographed at the Environmental Nature Center, Newport Beach CA.

Hand-held Nikon D5000 at ISO 400, with Nikkor 105G macro lens, 1/200-sec at f/22; local shade & Nikon SB-600 speedlight with O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment.

Yes very nice shots. I wonder what a "head-on" shot mite be like...maybe while eating.

Head-on is one of my favorite POVs with caterpillars. This critter is located within a tented "Butterfly Pavilion", and I was required to stay on the path (setting a good example for all the little kids who want to touch butterflies & caterpillars), so this was my only POV.

Here are a few caterpillar face portraits.
