Hardware Supply

I took this image at a Sears department store hardware department with my pocket camera. Unfortunately the camera's lens distorts everything but the very center of the image when zoomed out to its widest angle, but here I tried to use that normally undesirable distortion effect as a creative element.

I find the motion blur takes over any distortion.....

It's not motion blur. If you look at the center of the image, the edges are fairly crisp with no sign of motion blur. That blur that you see in the rest of the image is the distortion from the lens.

Go back and shoot it at ISO 400 and 1/100 second.

What I often run into with some of my stylized pp attempts is I don't take the effect far enough and people comment that it just looks like a mistake

That's what I'm feeling here with the edges of this image. I do really, really like the subject, however. I find a lot of interest in the sheer volume of drawers and bins. The tones are pleasing, especially if you were going for a vintage look, though I also think higher contrast would be pretty cool.

It actually could be an interesting shot but the distortion is not working as an artistic effect its looking like a mistake. Worth a reshoot with a decent camera though.

Wow! You have a Sears store that actually has hardware? That's amazing. The last time I went to a Sears store for something, the clerk told me I might be able to order it from their hq in Chicago. Another time I wanted a replacement crank for my radial arm saw, and the clerk responded, "What's a radial arm saw?" Enough of my rant about Sears.

That's a nice pattern shot you have there, by the way. I like it.

It is a really good idea. Unfortunately it is too far out of sharpness. Might be because of the distortion or possibly the camera did not focus properly. I think I would try to re shoot this one. I would also suggest that you might want to crop is so that you don't cut any of the trays in half. You could use the uprights and horizontals as natural frames. I think there is a lot of potential in a shot like this.

Yes, there is fuzzy distortion around the edges, that is just part of the "fun" challenge of photography we have to endure in quest of the perfect picture.

I like this picture, I like the composition, I like the browntone treatment, I just like it.

Good work,

Ken

Thanks, Ken. I think you are the first poster who actually understands what I am trying to demonstrate here - about working within given technical limitations by using the character of the equipment's short-comings as an effect.
