I am an amateur photographer currently own D7100 and a few lenses. Main goal is family vacation and home photographs. Not professional. While watching one of Scott Kelby's photography videos, I got tempted in buying the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 lens (VR II). This was in 2011. I still have the lens, but have hardly used it as I find it too bulky and at times embarrassing to be honest to carry it at kids events, etc. (Oh the looks I get from people like I am a true professional). Its like almost new. I am considering selling it on eBay and buy the 24-70 f/2.8 lens - which by no means is any lighter, but at least I know I will use it a lot. Just so you are curious, I have Nikkors 50mm/1.8 and 18-200/3.5-5.6.

I would like suggestions on how to proceed. i.e. Go for it on eBay, or why not sell it here, or keep it for the 'long run', or swap it on a trusted website, or 'what the heck you were thinking dude'.

I always ready the daily chats and have learnt a lot from this forum. Thank you in advance.

Check the price for your 70-200 by looking that the auctions that have closed in the last 30-60 days on eBay. That will give you a range of value for your lens. The 24-70 is only 2 lbs, the 70-200 is 3.4 lbs - big difference.

You will iikely get a little more if you auction on eBay with a high reserve, but it may take a while.

I like to buy from Fred Miranda's classified listings - better prices, generally more honest sellers, and if you use paypal, you have some buyer protection in the event that you get something that doesn't match the seller's description.

Let me tell you what I did, I bought myself a nice 35mm lens for my D3000 nikon. For everyday walk around functions takes beautiful pics. Check into it.

I think you should start by using this lens a lot more because it is your best lens for quality photos of kids in sports. Do not find it embarrassing to use it, if you get the grip on it the other parents might want some prints of your pics taken with that lens.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I truly love the lens and once I get my hands super steady I know I can get amazing pictures on it. I have thought about just keeping it because I am going to lose atleast 700-1000 on my original price if I sell it, so why not keep it. But its hard to justify getting 24-70 when you already have a hefty, expensive equipment eating dust. I do appreciate your thoughts.
I do like the 35mm, but since I have 50mm I am reluctant. 18-200 is my walk around lens for now.
I am not considering selling it here because I am not sure how the payment system works. I trust paypal at eBay.
If I decide to sell it here, I will post pictures, etc.

Have you thought about the older Nikon 35-70 2.8? It's a push/pull, but they get decent reviews, and can be found pretty inexpensively. I know I got lucky and got mine for $100. Even though I don't use it very much, for that kind of price I don't mind it just sitting around in between uses. It's pretty light weight.... Then you could keep your nice 70-200.

If you find it heavy, just use a monopod or tripod if you have one. The 70-200 f2.8 is a very nice lens.

You'll get the same looks with the 24-70 f/2.8...and why should you care. If embarrassment is a problem, your missing out on more than just shots of your kids. You probably pass on shots where you need to pull over or street shots wondering what others will think. Who gives a S^%&... Get over it and keep the 70-200, buy the 24-70 and then the 14-24...BTW, Scott Kelby jumped the Nikon Ship and defected over to Canon.

I have bought and sold lenses on here with great success. Much better prices than ebay and PayPal is still a means for payment.

I found myself in a similar situation a few years ago. I spent over $2,000 for a 70-20mm, but I found myself using it very little - too big, too heavy, too expensive. I sold it on ebay for almost what I paid for it. A while later, I bought a NOS 80-200mm f/2.8 from KEH. I had never before been sold! I got it for a little over $600. It's still big and heavy, but at a fraction of the cost of the 70-200mm, I'm not afraid to use it. I also got a 35-70mm f/2.8 and saved a bundle. New is overrated.

Trip-D,

First, I would also be one to recommend that you keep the 70-200 and begin to use it more. I believe that you will grow to love it.

Next, I'd like to address your comment that some people have confused you with a "professional". The defining characteristic between a "professional" and an "amateur"/"hobbyist" is not their individual abilities, but rather that one is paid and one is not. The spectrum of quality is broad in both categories. I encourage you to build your self confidence so that the size of that lens is an asset instead of a liability (you may find that the impressiveness of your kit will actually afford you a prime spot at an event instead of viewing the event in a sea of cellphones).

Good luck on your decision process.

Bob

I was at a local hot rod show, with a Nikon on each shoulder. One of the car owners asked if I was from a newspaper. I said, "No - just an expensive hobby." He looked at his car and said, "I know all about expensive hobbies." :D

Jerryc,

I had the very same reaction at the last Commemorative Air Force Fly In that I attended. Those guys also know something about expensive hobbies! My Nikon 200-500mm also opened up a spot at the front of the rope for me.
