I have a Nikon D3300. And I was reading about UV filters. That seems to be a very hot topic. So I found a lot of older filters from my film day's. Anyways I will cut it short. What I did was to play with the camera effects mode. I put in pop's mode. And I saw the flash busted up most of the photos. So I got a old dark red filter. It says 49 mm HSC Red no1. And I put the camera into live mode. Then I hand held the filters in front of the flash. And took a photo in pop mode . I wish I could post it. At this time my new laptop and I are having technical difficult problems. But if anybody feel free to put a filters in front of a flash. Have fun
Sounds like a creative way to have some fun.
Gels have been used for years in front of flash.

May be a new use for all those color correction filters from film days that are laying around collecting dust now.
the real joy of any hobby is when you leave conventional and step out into the " I wonder what will happen if I do ???"
I've got dozens of Nikon CC filters, 52mm thread. All colors. They were on the expensive side when I bought them. Used by serious film shooters. Now, you can't give them away. No value. I have yet to try them on flashes, but I will. Thanks.
Years ago I read something about putting Vaseline on the outside of lenes. The pictures were kinda frosted and had a lot of blurred back ground. At that time I thought wow. However I never had the guts at that time to put anything on a lens.
