Hello All,
Finally replaced my D300 in June with a D500. Figured I would keep the D300 as a back up or for carrying a shorter lens when using my 200-500 Nikkor on the D500. Anyway I though that since it had never been serviced I might send it in for a general clean and check but they said no "we don't service the D300 anymore." Any suggestions for reputable service folks? Or should I just pick up a second D500 as a back up .... Ha! Don't let my wife hear that ... maybe a 7200. Probably at this point just a service for the 300! Thanks,
Dale

If you aren't having a issues with the D300, just take it to your local camera shop and ask them to clean the sensor. Check your batteries for the D300 and perhaps buy a new one just so it's in tip top condition. Since you probably aren't going to use it much, or at all, just cleaning it and having a fresh battery on the ready should be sufficient.

Cleaning the sensor, and keeping the lens cavity from dust and other debris, carried in the wind, is the best care you can give your camera. And keeping the battery charged. Get a rocket blower and a sensor cleaning kit. Your D300 will keep on running.

NikonUSA said they didn't service the D300 anymore? That's surprising and disappointing.

If that's true, the D7200 refurbs are a very good deal right now.

Odd because the original D300 is still less than 10 years old and the D300S is only 7+ years old. I could perhaps see it if there was an intervening model between it and the D500, but there wasn't.

Surprised me too, just assumed they serviced anything Nikon.

APS in Morton Grove IL will service it if you really want it serviced. They are an authorized Nikon service facility.

Not that it's a bad camera, if fact it's top rated in its class, but you probably wouldn't be happy with the D7200 as a backup. The button layout is different than the D300 and 500, which are similar (as are the 700, 800 and 810). I rarely use my D7000 because of that.

That's surprising, but when you figure how many parts are in that ten-year old camera, how long would Nikon keep producing and stocking all those parts? A few years ago I brought my 39 year old Stihl chain saw to the dealer to have something done. When I picked it up, he said he wouldn't be able to get parts much longer. Still, after more than thirty years, I can't complain, and the saw keeps running.

Just to put things in perspective, it's likely less expensive to buy a D300 from KEH/Adorama/B&H used, but checked out, than it would be to have Nikon check out your used D300.

Yes I recently found out that Nikon doesn't service a number of older items when I traded all of my Nikon gear (D300s, D750 and 10 lenses) for several Fuji pro lenses. The trade in value of these items was very much affected by this news. I also found out they don't service SB-800 speedlites and they are now almost worthless, so I kept them because they still work, and I have figured out how to use them as slaves with my Fuji XT-2. (I'm now shooting 100% with my Fuji XT-2 mirrorless system mostly for weight and size reasons.) My D300s was a real workhorse that still worked perfectly, so I would simply have your sensor cleaned and get a new battery or two. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
