This might be a little bit winded but here goes.
My wife and I will be in Italy for a month. I will be taking probably 5 - 4GB, SD cards and 5 - 8GB SD cards. I will load the pics to a notebook when filled and will not reuse the cards so that I have the photos in 2 locations until our return.

Here is what I need help with. I want to label each location on the cards to where photos was taken. I do not want the card to be just DSC 0143 etc. but rather have 9/23 Morano and the miltiple DSC designation. The same card might have 3-6 destinations.

Make sense? Help please.

Go to iTunes and get Geophototag for $3.99. It uses you cell phone for WiFi and then when you download it to your pc it will show geographic location. I downloaded the app on my pc and it's on my iPod touch for when I'm in the field(my phone doesn't have apps). It will install on iPhones, iPads and iPod touch. It reads each photo for location. I don't think it labels the card itself, it only tells the location the picture was taken. It shows the arial map with 1, 2, 3 etc on it.

connect card to lap top by card reader,go to computor and bring up icons. hold down shift key and click on first of series, then click on last .go back to first and click rename.type in morano 6/14/12 1 hit enter and it will rename all in series morano 6/14/12 1 then morano 6/14/12 2 etc.

Suggest you do not do that!
If you write to your card from the laptop (which includes renaming a file) you run a small risk or corrupting the card and losing your back-up.

If your memory cards are your back-ups you will want your laptop and back-up filenames to be the same. I suggest you leave the file names alone and create file folders (directories) for each card with an identifying name and date on your laptop. Then label each card accordingly to match your laptop file folder names. (If I understand you correctly..)

BTW, you cannot use the / symbol (as well as several other characters) in filenames as is is reserved by the OS for other purposes.

I want the cards to have an i.d of some sorts. The downloading to the laptop is for a saftety back up. I need to know what I shot and want to do that on the Card - if possible.

Make sense/ I'm not sure I followede your response

I don't load on laptop, just view in the drive that the card is.Then send to external hard drive and dvd then erase. Never formatted a card and never had any trouble.

Guys I want to know what I shot, when I shoot it.

I know how to back up, down load etc. I know I can get GPS as well as set the date and time zone. What I'd rather do is "format" the cards in such a way that I identify what I am shooting when I am shooting on the cards.

Is there a way to do that?

I take a small pocket pad with me and write down the location with the starting picture number and the ending picture number for each location. Make folders in my computer for each location when I get home and transfer the corresponding pictures into the folders.

My D7000 lets me give a prefix to the pics that are saved on the card. I use "D7k," so when I see an image with that prefix, I know what camera I used. As someone else said, don't mess around with SD cards in your computer. Format the cards in the camera, upload the images to the laptop, and leave them alone till you get home.

Having the images stored in two places is a very good idea.

That is an excellent suggestion. It's called GeoTag Photos, and they have a free and a paid version, but I have no idea what the difference is. Like Gidgette, I have it installed on all my devices. When I open the photos in LR4, it shows where I went and where the photos were taken.

Even if you don't use it for taking pictures, you can let it run for a day, and it will will show you where you have travelled. You have to use your cell phone for that, though, rather than the computer.

Be aware that it uses quite a bit of battery power since it is running all the time. Having a car charger would be a good idea.

When traveling I see taking pictures of signs. at first blush seemed a bit strange until I realized that it was a great way to make folders of where I have been on that date. failing that I considered shooting an image of a notepad with my notation of where the images were shot . Date and time are in your EXIF

I also take pictures of signs - signs that strike me as funny.

heres only a suggestion ...i would buy a small external hard drive...along with my computer i would upload all the files from my cards..have them on both the computer and the external hard drive and format my cards and reuse them..memory cards can be lost ..corrupted etc..always format your cards through the camera..
i once took a class and the teacher explained why..when you delete an image on a card it is like using white out on a sheet of paper and writing over it..then you delete another photo and thats like another white out over that image..if you format its like putting in a fresh piece of paper...
i do not store my photos on memory cards anymore..i only upload them on the computer .and an extra..harddrive ..and then when the computer is too loaded i have the hard drive and also start putting them in folders on a disc....theres only so much space on a computer..
if you have enough cards during your vacation use them up then when you get home try the method i suggested ..then you won't need to be buying so many cards..it will save you lots of money in the long run...

Place a card into the card reader, double click on "My Computer" and right click on the Card icon and select "Properties". In the "General" tab click in the edit field at the very top and enter the text (card name), click "Apply" when done.

This actually changes the volume name of the card and does not mess with any previous formatting.
