i use 2 cameras , a D300 and aD70 .on the D300 i can use any kind of lenses even T mount and use the non CPU program to enter a max lenses opening [ f stop ] .that way i can shot in aperture [ A ] priority , and the auto exposure work fine .on the D70 there is not , or i cant find the same non CPU program menus .because of that it only work on M mode , all other modes are dead . am using a 400mm tokina f5.6 that has a diaphragm f stop outer ring .is that the way it is ???? thank you .

Yes. I had a D70 years ago. It sucked with old glass.
Contact Nikon and get a copy of the Owners Manual for the very old (2004) 6.2MP Nikon D70 crop sensor camera. That manual should answer many of your questions. Good luck.

Well, I had several AI Nikkors I wanted to use with it. PITA! Manual aperture control is so 1950s...

Actually I found it's great with old glass as I can safely mount any Nikon F mount lenses on it. The D300 would be damaged if you mount a pre AI lens on it. Being a digital camera having to shoot in full manual and no meter is of no problem to me. Not a problem either even if it's a film camera.
No you can't...I used to use older manual focus lenses on my old D70s (which one of my sons now has) all the time and in full manual mode as none of the other modes would work . Mounting a Pre-Ai lens would potentially damage the aperture follower tab & there was no decent mirror lock up (except for sensor cleaning) to be able to mount invasive fisheye lenses whose rear optics intruded into the camera body. I also own a D300 as well. Now 3rd party Pre-Ai lenses could be used on the D70s or D300 as many of them did not have aperture "skirts" which extended down past the mount face. Nikon at one point gave kits to owners of older Pre-Ai lenses , new aperture rings that fixed the issue so the older lenses could be used with newer cameras. Any Nikon or Nikkor lens shold be examined carefully to ensure that the won't damage the camera they are being mounted on. Even if the "skirt" doesn't extend down past the mount face, any binding while mounting the lens should make one not continue to attempt to mount it.

thank you for your complete answer .i have a pentax IstD, just tried my T mount long lens , and voila , it work fine on AUTO mode , right exposure ,since this lens has no adjustable f stop [ it is a f11 ] , the camera did not care .just hand focus and shoot .thank you again .
