Hi All,
I am a "Newbie" to this site as well as Digital Photography, I have moderate experience in different formats of film photography from 4x5 view cameras to 35mm, have given most equipment away, but still have lots of Nikon 35mm stuff, all that just to tell you where I am. Presently I am a Realtor(R) needing to be proficient in digital photography, I have used several P&S cameras, but recently bought a used Nikon D5000 and have some success with the lens that came with it (18-55) but have had a lot of fun using my old Nikon Glass on manual. Being in Real Estate I need a lens that can be used for interior room photos as well as a medium telephoto, so ordered a Nikon 16-85. My question is has anyone used this lens and what is your experience, good or bad? Thank you
We have two at work.
It's a pretty decent lens with good range. Not as much as the 18-200, but it is a bit wider.
Here is Thom Hogan's review:
http://www.bythom.com/Nikkor16-85lensreview.htmFor real estate, however, I think that something even wider would be more useful. I have a Sigma 10-20. Others have mentined the Tokina 11-16 2.8 as good option.
Thank you for you reply, I thought the 16 would give me a decent wide view without any distortion, but I guess I wouldn't have to use the widest angle!!

If you're talking about things like barrel distortion, you can correct that in Photoshop. As you probably know, at 16mm on your D5000, it has the same angle of view as a 24mm lens on a 35mm or ff digital camera. Make sure you have the camera level to minimize any keystoning distortion.
Thank you again, I have sooo... much to learn about digital!! :)

One of the reasons I bought my Tokina 12-24 was for interior shots when I was a Realtor (boy, was I lousy at that). But I did learn the lesson others are trying to teach. A 10-12 minimum in a rectilinear (that's important) is essential for room shots unless you have a full frame camera.
I have owned that lens for almost a year now and it is my walk around everyday lens. Photos are tack sharp, great AF. Using it with my D-300. Love this lens!
Love my 16-85, but for interiors I love my 8-16 Sigma the most.
The 16-85 is one of Nikon's best zoom lenses as far as optics are concerned. I leave mine on my D7000 most of the time. The only lens I own that is optically superior is the 14-24.

When shooting 35mm cameras, one of my favorite lens was the 24mm Nikor prime. I was able to get back to that scope with the 16 to 85. I keep the 16 to 85 on my camera all the time. It is an excellent lens and I do recommend it. I also use the 12-24 Tokina and it too does a good job. You will be happy with your purchase.
I believe you've made a good choice. I've been using the 16-85mm VR Nikon lens for a few years and for the price it's one of the best in my opinion. Very sharp and versitial, works great for doing panoramas at various focal lengths and should be adequate for real estate captures. The 16mm will cover home inside shots nicely, although there may be some perspective distortion which can be corrected in post processing. I enjoy it mostly for landscape & floral images, nature, and even portrature. Good Luck, I'm sure you'll be pleased with its performance.

Thanks to all of you for the great information, sounds like I made a good choice, with maybe an additional shorter focal length for some of my interior shots! They tell me that my 16-85 is back ordered, hope it arrives soon!
