Thanksgiving with the birds

We spent Thanksgiving down in Newport Beach (CA) so we were closer to family. Not getting to the beach much I had to take advantage of it. On the Newport peninsula just north of the pier is a fresh fish market where the merchants clean the catch daily. Needless to say, the birds love it when treats get thrown out on the sand. Makes for lots of opportunities and the birds are much more involved waiting for handouts than worrying about a guy with a camera getting close. It was really fun. Here some examples. Glad to see the Brown Pelicans are beginning to show signs of breeding plumage. All of these shots were taken with a Canon 5DIV and 400mm DOII, most with a 1.4X, some without. I made the visit two mornings, getting there before dawn. The first day was without tripod with good success, however considering the close-ups, I brought the tripod the second day to be able to close up the aperture some to get a better depth of field.

Hope you enjoy.

Great set, I used to hang out at Newport in the 60s. These shots are excellent, sharp as a tack, good stuff.

Great shots! I love pelicans, such funny birds. That squawking gull is a hoot.

Beautiful set - Enjoy those pelicans a lot. Grate colors, details, sharpness .. and again I see Canon 5D IV. Those bodies have somehow impressed me a lot. It's like, I know what kind of detail I am to expect when opening full size.

Very nice series. Your second shot looks like the bird is running. The tail feathers look like a leg. Brought a smile to my face.
