Hello Group
I am headed to Cuba later this week and am in a quandary about taking my 100-400 Canon lens vs just the 70-200 which is quite a bit lighter and a 1.4 extender. I will also have a 16-35 and 24-105. Obviously the weight and bulk being lugged all day is a consideration.
Has anyone that has been on the tours found a real need for the longer heavier glass? I will also be on a boat going port to port so that may be a consideration but????
Thanks
I've found while traveling, lightness is a must. I normally take my Nikon 28-300 and a 24 mm Sigma for nighttime shots. So the 70 - 200 and 16-35 should do it. Is your Canon crop or full frame?
I will be taking my Canon 5D3 on this trip.
Thanks for the reply.
I would take the 16-35 and 24-105 you don't want to lug too much stuff around especially when getting on or off boats.
I was there last year and there was a guy who toted a ton of equipment how he did drop any of it the water I will never know.
Unlike many I'm not willing to comprise my equipment when I travel. I'll be making my second Cuba trip in January and carry my resource equipment just as I would on a local shoot v
Why not? Are you willing to be less accurate, creative or to accept less than you would normally accept just because of having a heavier camera bag?

I would forget the 400, unless you are a bird man, or a CIA spy! You have already forseen the probs, YOU, have to cart it about! FYI, I have been to Havana, extremely safe, tho' I would avoid 'Chinatown', there are no Chinese there! Do take a polariser, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I simply took my 16-300 and it was fine. Take a polarizer as you might find yourself taking photos from the bus window. Also, I asked every person for permission to take their picture if it was obvious. They will even pose. I gave them a coin for their cooperation. There are very few birds where you will be going.
I would recommend the 16-35 and 24-105, that is all you will need. Less is more when you travel.

You will not be happy without the 24-105; and I think you will regret not having your long lens for a few shots--take the 100-400. I don't think you will feel disadvantaged without the 16-35.
I use a 5D MKIII with the 24-105, and a 70-300; I frequently find myself wanting more length. I also bought the 50mm and the 100mm macro lenses, but I have not traveled with them. I do have a Tamrac belt with a camera holster and multiple lens holsters that I use when I am walking a lot. The reason I think you will find your 100-400 lens useful is that you will have opportunities for long shots that will not be duplicated when you get closer to your subjects. Good luck and have a great trip.
Thank you everyone for the replies. Seems that there is a lot of variance in experience so more thought to go into it.
