As I see the shots that people put on the photo gallery and ask what they could do better, one thing always stands out to me....lighting.
For some reason, we "make do" with whatever light is there but spend a LOT of time on the other parts of the image; composition, color, etc.
I'm the same way...lighting is the hardest part to execute when creating an image, I neglect it just like many others.
Here is a short video about light painting. It's just a couple of wrenches but watch what happens when you light them effectively...they come alive.
