A Pre-Dawn Arrival

This is my third, and last, of the pre-dawn shots. Enough for a triptych if I can figure out what I want and how. (The bird is the only manipulation).

I was sore tempted to place a gull in the upper right corner, but I couldn't make up my mind which bird...
OK, I'm through...for the time being.

I tried an edit of this photo and ended up botching it so badly that I don't want to post it. It would not have brought anything to light. What I was trying to do was get your horizon out of the middle of the photo and to enhance the light around the horizon selectively. After messing with it for quite a while, I found that your version was better than anything I could achieve in an edit. The one area that I think should get some attention is the blending of the bird. It looks, especially in download, too much like a "placed" item. Perhaps some blur around the very edges of the bird? There are others on the forum who are much more adept at this sort of thing than I . I think it will make an interesting triptych. Would love the see the end result.

Darn! I intentionally blurred the edges of the bird when I cut it out. Obviously not enough. Since I seem so inclined to stick things into my images I guess I'd better get to experimenting and practicing. I thought the geese over Mt. Baker worked pretty good. On those I decreased the opacity quite a bit. On this cormorant I didn't think it necessary due to the closer distance to the camera.

The horizon light in this image is totally different than the other two, possibly because it is several degrees farther to the left of sun than the others. I probably have some trial results to match what you encountered.
Thank you for your input, Erich. Back to the drawing board for me...

In the thumbnail image the bird is fine. I only noticed a problem in download. I think you are very close. Perhaps I'm being too picky here. As you mentioned, the geese were just fine.

If you see a problem in download at 100% that's not too bad (I think), as I have no intention of printing at more than 8 x 10.
I'm just now going to post the triptych.
