In post processing I added a dazzling painting effect to the scene.

Just personal 2c4, the painterly look seems okay with the yellow area but leaves the rest of the image looking over sharpened or something to me.

Thank you for your insight; I think you are correct. I will try to redo it.

While I'm not really that much of a fan of the "painted" look, I realize that is a personal choice. What I find exciting about this photo is how you selectively enhanced the yellow tree to make it pop from its background. We look at it as though it were almost a tree standing by itself. That works very well here. It is a result I have been trying to achieve this fall and has proven to be, as yet, elusive in my work. I applaud your efforts in that regard. Now that I know it can be done, all I need to do is go out and do it. lol

As personal preference, this particular look is neither my favorite nor least favorite of the painting special effects. At normal viewing distance on my 14" screen the image looks good, and is quite appealing for the pop of yellow against blue sky and darker surrounding foliage.

I agree with Linda that it is pleasing from afar because of the richness of color and depth the effect provides, but on closer inspection, it is dizzying to try and decipher all those squiggly lines. I don't use the plugins that create the squiggly lines because of that feeling, which is similar for me to trying to look at Dave Graham's 3D pairs. I can't enjoy the image because those particular graphic effects just derail my brain.

Always great to hear from you, Erich.
The painted look is not something I dabble with often; perhaps here it simply distracts too much from the subject and what I've tried to convey through composition.

I agree - viewed from a distance, the special effect is not so obvious and the image appears photographic rather than cartoony. This was my intention.

an interesting effect on the vines - I really like the colors. As a straight effect, I'm more like the other in that the view makes you dizzy. BUT - I think these types of effects can be a cool way to add mood and variety if you used a blending mode in conjunction with the effect - something like soft light on a layer, and then mask away the areas you aren't interested in.

Thank you for insight, minniev. Gives me something to think about. To derail brains was certainly not my intent with this image.

I'm not exactly normal, so don't worry about it! Do what pleases you first and foremost.
