backroader Loc: Wherever we park our motorhome

We spent two months in Newfoundland in 2014. It is a wonderful place to visit. We took our motorhome across from NS on the ferry. Loved the people and the things to see. Our least favorite place was probably St. John's. Our most favorite places were probably St. Anthony area, Cape St. Mary's, Witless Bay, Gros Morne NP and Fogo Island. Of those, Fogo Island is over-the-top unique, Cape St. Mary's is so, so special because of all the nesting Gannets, Murres, Razorbills, etc., Gros Morne is special for the Tablelands and St. Anthony area was great for icebergs, Burnt Cape and L'anse aux Meadows. Take some warm clothes. You don't go to Newfoundland for the weather! Enjoy one of our favorite places on earth!

I forgot to mention, Captain Wayne's boat excursion out of Witless Bay is the best day boat trip we have ever taken. His boat is small but very seaworthy so he can get you close to whales, puffins and other sea birds. There were 8 people on our trip and they really rake care of you! Not far from St. John's!

David, no problem with the pictures. Great memory shots. Thanks again.

You're welcome! My trip photo Collections are intended to preserve a record of where I've been, both so friends can "travel" with me, and as a means to resurrect memories later. Because of those objectives, I am not particularly selective in what I post (from a quality standpoint).

My advice concerns Newfoundland. If you are going to drive across the island and back again, that's two long days in the car. There is plenty to keep you interested on the west coast. For me, Gros Morne National Park is the most beautiful place on the island, well worth exploring in depth. Take the boat tour up Western Brook Pond, a spectacular fiord. If you are a hiker, climb Gros Morne mountain and see incredible views of Arctic-like landscape. Explore the Tablelands and their fascinating geology. Drive up the Northern Peninsula, stopping at Port au Choix, take a detour to Conche and the French Shore Interpretation Centre. Then continue to St. Anthony and on to L'Anse aux Meadows. Visit small villages up there such as Quirpon, Griquet and St. Lunaire. Onion Cove is worth seeing too. You have a good chance of seeing icebergs up there. Keep your batteries charged and have spare memory cards handy. And be prepared for all kinds of weather. Excessive heat unlikely.
Enjoy!

Make sure you stop at Turo for the tidal bore especially if the moon is full or near full. Cape Breton is a treat on the Cabot Trail.

Mike, that two days of driving has me somewhat concerned as well. I'm planning on breaking it up somehow. Your ideas are great and all sound like I should include them Thanks again for the help.

I'll check on Turo. Is that near the Bay of Fundy? We do plan to stay a couple days in Sydney, so maybe we can include Turo as well. Thanks for the information.

Mike, just noticed you live in Newfoundland. I wonder if you can help me plot a car tour starting at Port-Aux-Basques. We'll be taking the ferry from Sydney, NS and plan to stay a night at the Port. Eventually work our way to St. Johns' and then back again. It would be nice to break up the return trip as well. Any help you can provide would be great. Also, may try to go to Labrador as well once in St. Johns. Moose.

Hi Moose,
In the summer season there are two ferries to Newfoundland: North Sydney to Port aux Basques, and North Sydney to Argentia (see https://www.marineatlantic.ca/en/plan-your-travel/Schedule/. The Port aux Basques run is shorter and cheaper, but involves a long drive to St. John's if that's where you are headed. The Argentia run is longer and more expensive, but lands you just under 1.5 hours from St. John's. I would suggest you take the Port aux Basques ferry to get here, then travel up to Gros Morne National Park for several days. When you are ready to move on, head to Twillingate and allow yourself a couple of days to see off-the-beaten-track Newfoundland. I think you would enjoy it. This would break up the trip to St. John's. If you want another detour, you could try leaving the Trans-Canada at Clarenville and making for Trinity - very pretty (don't miss the Skerwink Trail if you go there). Then you can enjoy a stay in St. John's, and would be well placed to take the Argentia ferry back to N. Sydney.

You can get tourist information and a map from http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlanYourTrip/TravelBrochures.

I think you would find it a bit too much to try to drive up to St. Anthony as well as all the way across the island to St. John's, where I live. By all means let me know if you make it to St. John's and we could maybe hook up for some photo opps.

Good luck with this,
Mike.

Thanks Mike for your suggestions. Great idea on taking the Argentia ferry back from the St. Johns area. Save that long drive back. That would be great if we could meet up for some photos. Talk more on this later. Moose

Moose--

I understand from another post that it could be bad form to post one's photos on someone else's post. I just want you to know that I just posted the photo's I included above to show some examples of photo chances in some of the locations. I should have asked you first. Good luck with your trip. Happy to explain more about the itinerary I sent you, as needed. All the best.

Sending pictures, in my book isn't bad, as it is a way of supporting your comments. Some people have hang ups on this, but I don't. Thanks for including them.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that if you get over to the west side of Newfoundland, just south of Portland Creek, there is a place called the Arches which has some very unique formations right on the sea shore. This is well worth seeing if you get over to Gros Morne Park. I am not sure whether this area is in the park or just north of it.

All the best.

Thanks for that tip. I looked it up and it is something we would be interested in seeing. Great to have you all helping me out with this trip.
