I read an article one day 10 years in local paper.
It showed how much a gallon of various items cost.
Milk - fruit & veggie drinks - water - gasoline - alcohol, etc.
The last one listed was "printers ink"!
You buy those little cartridges for $10-15 or more.
A gallon of ink cost: $3,500.00
How's that photographers?
Now you why printers cost so little

If that's true, I won't complain about what I pay any longer.

Yep, that's why it cost you about 3-4000 ($),or more, every time you replace your ink cartridges in your printer ( if you own one of the big boys)!

It costs me about $50 for my 5-tank Canon.

I own 2 fairly large printers (Pixma Pro 10 & 100) and to replace all 18 cartridges with OEM it costs around $240 USD.
There are other options, you don't have to purchase printer manufacturer's own cartridges no matter what they say. For years now I have used cloned catridges with absolutely no problems whatsoever and they are considerably less expensive. If you can find your way around the Spansh, you can see the prices here:

I've been reading lots of stories like yours lately. My only experience was quite some years ago and had nothing but clog issues so I never bought generic again. Perhaps it's time for me to try again.
My guess is part of the problem with these price comparison studies is ignoring the ratio of the container to the liquid. If the other items came in less than eye dropper quantities, each packaged with plastic and electronics, as well as the other packaging for display and sale, then those items would be very highly priced per gallon as well.

One of the things that I also consider is that every ink cartridge is an electronic device so that's got to figure into the cost as well.

Yes, it is ridiculous. That's why you can buy printers for under $100. It can be cheaper to keep buying printers than buying a set of cartridges for them. What's even worse is getting "starter" cartridges in a new printer.
Be careful....be careful...before buying 3rd. party ink. It's a road I traveled once, but never again. Cost me a set of Canon print heads.
FYI, I've never purchased anything but name brand laser toner, specifically HP. I have two HP laser printers I use for teaching (B&W). On the older one, a machine in which I've always used HP toner, I decided to try 3rd. party toner. Save money, and every page has a thin line running down it, top to bottom.
Ink and toner, we pretty much get what we pay for.
Okay guys, go ahead and attack. I can take it.

No attack but simply that I have had absolutely the opposite experience. Not only with cloned Canon inkjet cartridges but also with Canon cloned toners for my laser printer.
If I replaced all the ink carts in my 64 inch Epson at one time, with OE ink, I'd be looking at around 2k.

But there are so many items priced in a similar manner that you probably buy without even thinking about it--razors & blades, prescription drugs (most generic too), paint, vacuum cleaners, etc.--is it really worth worrying and/or complaining about. If you had to buy a gallon of each color printer ink, a case of razor blades, drugs packed by the pound, or a full keg of beer, your objection might be understandable, but mostly those items are packed in usable and consumable quantities so they are generally affordable.
Regarding the inks, you always have the choice of not printing yourself, and sending them out, but if you print a lot, it wouldn't take long for your printing costs to approach, perhaps exceed, your ink purchase costs. I suspect ink is one of the minor costs associated with your hobby.
The objection to printer ink costs has been posted on UHH more times that any of us can remember; GET OVER IT!
