This is for those of you who have used the new ON1 RAW and also have used Lightroom. Have you decided which one does a better job?

Thanks,
DebAnn

I've never used ON1. But I can attest to the fact that LR is very good. It's not just a raw editing program. It's a database for your collection of images that is very powerful. It also works seamlessly with many other Adobe and non Adobe products for pixel editing, plugins etc.

Thanks, but what I'm wanting to know is whether any users of both programs have decided if one is better than the other. I already use Lightroom.

For me, LR is far better because of its cataloging functionality. on1 doesn't utilize any organizational tools, other than a file browser.

Thank you Bruce. I watched the first part of a seminar by the ON1 people and you are able to catalog photos in any way you like so this wouldn't be a real problem. Have you actually used the program - trying out the editing functions?

Yes, I've owned a license for quite a while. I use a couple of the modules somewhat regularly, but not for my raw processing. I must take a look again, for my understanding is that there is no cataloging functionality in on1. As mentioned, it has a browser, which is akin to Windows Explorer or Apple's Finder.

When I get the final recording of the seminars (there are 2 more, I believe), I will post a link for you. I think you are right about the cataloging function but what they are saying is that you can still create a catalog on your system to which your ON1 files will be posted.

I would guess there are very few that have used ON1 RAW as it hasn't been release yet. Preorders are going to be release by the end of November. And the full-blown version sometime in December.

The initial presentation by ON1 that I watched yesterday looks really positive.

Actually the browser is pretty good and offers a bit more than Explorer or Finder. It is fast, let's you tag a single image or a group of images with LR compliant stars, colors, picks, and keywords. When I have a very large number of images to sort through (like when I come home after a trip and have to look through 1000 or more images), I will copy the images to my computer, then use On1 Browse to look at them and cull, rate and keyword them. Once I am done I will use LR to "Add" the folders to my catalog. Makes the whole process a lot faster. My only complaint is that the Browse module uses the public domain raw converter - dcraw - to generate the fast previews, and the quality of the previews as implemented is not great. The new version of ON1RAW uses their own raw conversion engine and I have been assured by ON1 Tech that this is no longer an issue.

On 1 Raw will be available tomorrow it is a beta the next download will be Dec.19 the rest to follow in 2017. it is not made to replace LR. The main difference is it does not use catalougs. That is why it is so much faster. It is intagrated with LR and PS. Much easier to use layers in 1 than PS. They spent the whole day yesterday explaining all the new features. Also there are videos on their website.
